BIOGRAPHY.
The middle child of six, Ryo's life started on the wrong side of the bed. Parents always teetering on the edge of an ugly split-- or in the middle of a 'break', which would inevitably end with whomever had been kicked out of whatever residence they were in crawling back-- the siblings were left to care for and squabble amongst themselves. Despite being a middle child, Ryo is the biggest of his siblings, and his role as the pacifier and protector became apparent early on, frequently stopping fights by sitting on the offending parties or blocking the doorway between an angry adult and frustrated child. This would extend outside of the home, too; with Ryo earning a reputation for prowling the neighborhood and challenging both fellow students and even teachers who had the audacity to make his siblings cry.
Unfortunately, this only earned him a reputation as violent, and as the pressure of his role began to intensify with no outlet, he began to lash out, committing minor acts of vandalism or getting into fights. His first experience with a muzzle was after a fight with his own father, manhandled into it and forbidden from removing it outside of mealtimes. (Not that he listened, when he could get away).
Admittedly, his interest in becoming a hero was sparked by both fame and financial success, seeking validation for what he had been doing for so long and a way to drag himself and his siblings out of the hell hole they were in. He even cleaned up his act in school, struggling to study between part-time jobs and joining a club dedicated to cleaning up litter to improve what had been a rather delinquent record.
It was just enough, and combined with his excellent scores on the entrance exam (both in destroying robots with his bare hands and search-and-rescue), he was accepted into U.A. It was there that he'd meet Sekijiro Kan, and the two quickly struck up a bond and began making their own type of mischief together. Never malicious, but both a little hot-headed and impulsive, the two frequently ended up in rivalries based on the silliest misconceptions. Their mutual feelings of being misunderstood strengthened their bond and both of them graduated into full-fledged heroes.
For a brief time after graduation, they ran their own agency called Hellsing, active mostly at night. Eventually, though, they would both drift towards education, Kan becoming a teacher and Ryo becoming a counselor.
Despite not being on speaking terms with his parents, he and his siblings still keep in touch. They're ardent defenders of him in the comments of "Most Villainous-Looking Heroes" articles.
