Presented at Skewered III, August 27th, A.S. LVII (2022).
This scroll is based on the Ripley Scrolls, a set of famous alchemical scrolls from the late 16th or early 17th century. The recipient was receiving an award for, among many thing, teaching about medieval alchemy in her local group.
I was very pleased with how the gold linework came out on this scroll. The rays in the sun were mercifully straight and even and the texture I was able to add to the bark/stems on the roses really showed off in the right light.
Because I think it's important to share mistakes as well as successes, I present the above. The scroll was finished, but I managed to put my thumb direly into wet ink. Luckily for me, an exacto knife and a tiny piece of high grit sand paper scrubbed away most of the smudged ink and the signature was mostly restored.
