Bio
Adam Hostomsky is an accomplished pianist, composer, and accompanist dedicated to bringing deep insight and virtuoso fireworks in both traditional and experimental repertoire to audiences in San Diego and around the world.
"Hostomsky is a gifted artist, playing difficult pieces as Scarlatti's Sonata K35 in g minor, with manic energy that matches his virtuoso skills. The concert might include his renditions of works by Haydn, Chopin, or Bach, but whatever he plays, classical fans or anyone who likes instrumental piano music will be impressed by his delivery, clearly full of passion for the music he is performing." (Bart Mendoza, sdnews.com)
A graduate of La Jolla High, UCSB, and CalArts, past projects include performances of Romantic era Mexican piano music, eccentric French composers, and Czech modernism, in addition to traditional repertoire. Adam is currently performing "Elevated Salon" French music of the late 19th century.
Bio#2
Award winning classical pianist Adam Hostomsky is dedicated to bringing deep insight and virtuoso fireworks to audiences in San Diego and the world. Adam was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and started playing piano at the age of 3 1/2. At age 8 his family settled in La Jolla, a coastal town in San Diego, CA and continued his musical development. He studied with Betty Oberacker at University of California Santa Barbara and received a Master of Fine Arts Piano Performance from California Institute of Arts in 2005 where he studied with Peter Miyamoto and Liam Viney. In addition to the standard repertoire Adam Hostomsky is involved in the discovery of unheard music from past centuries. Unique performances include half-tone compositions of Czech composer Alois Haba - Los Angeles Disney’s REDCAT hall in 2005, major works of Ricardo Castro 2016-2020. He is a popular local performer in San Diego with over 100 concerts.

About the music: Theme Varie is Mexican composer Ricardo Castro's last published piece. It consists of a theme, five variations, and a finale. The entire piece is influenced by Schumann's Symphonic Etudes and contains small hints of Mexican idiom and Latin musical style. After the theme, Castro's trademark virtuoso passagework begins to connect the melodic material culminating in the last variation itself a direct representation of Schumann's last variation in g sharp minor. The finale triumphantly ends the piece with a brilliant polonaise.

About the program:
Rameau Gavotte: One of the most popular pieces for harpsichord from the French Baroque period, the Gavotte et 6 doubles concludes the expansive Suite in 'a' minor. Similar to other Baroque variation sets the theme is traditionally played slowly in highly ornamented fashion. The first two variations are related by their scale pattern in alternating hands similarly to the final two variations related by an original arpeggio pattern - later used by Schumann in Symphonic etudes. The music feels Gothic with a special emotional drive towards an epic conclusion.
Suk Love Song: Josef Suk bridged the gap between the Czech late romantic and modern periods. Mostly known for his orchestral and violin music, his early piano pieces like the op.7 set written at 17 years old contain originality with lush romantic ideas and are popular with many Czech pianists. "Love Song" is an ABA form with a dramatic middle section and a catchy motif in the opening. The op.22 Spring and Summer cycle is more mature but still deeply rooted in the romantic tradition.
Fibich Moods, Impressions, and Reminiscences: The complete cycle of Fibich's Moods, Impressions, and Reminiscences written in the mid 1890's spans across several Opus numbers 41, 44, 47, 57 and contains a total of 373 pieces making it the largest set from the Romantic era as far as I know. Like the sonatas of Scarlatti they are often rich in originality and sometimes clones. In Fibich's case ideas and melodies are purposefully repeated throughout the set. As a whole the set tends to the slower and quieter side of music with frequent use of pianississimo dynamics and Lento (slow) tempo indications. #139 known as "Poem" is Fibich's most famous piece has been transcribed for numerous arrangements including violin and pop orchestra.

Program notes
Rameau Gavotte: One of the most popular pieces for harpsichord from the French Baroque period, the Gavotte et 6 doubles concludes the expansive Suite in 'a' minor. Similar to other Baroque variation sets the theme is traditionally played slowly in highly ornamented fashion. The first two variations are related by their scale pattern in alternating hands similarly to the final two variations related by an original arpeggio pattern-later used by Schumann in Symphonic etudes. The music has a Gothic feel and presses forward to an epic conclusion.
Thalberg Op.9: This rare early fantasia based on music from the opera La Straniera (The foreign woman) by Vincenzo Bellini from 1830. The music is filled with Thalberg's usual virtuoso flair, especially in the lavish interludes which transition the larger melodic sections. If you are offended by mindless note spinning, you might want to sit this one out! The fantasia has several special features. The pattern of the left hand accompaniment of the first theme is an invention of Thalberg later used by other composers of the salon genre. So much so that it is employed by about half of the fantasias of Ignace Leybach, a one time student of Chopin. Thalberg's variation of this accompaniment into sextuplets goes further than Leybach's overall simpler style ever does. The piece as a whole especially in the first and last sections bear an unmistakable resemblance to many fantasias of the later Leybach, as if Leybach based his entire output of opera fantasies on this piece. Before the finale the pleasant salon character is interrupted by a Beethovenian fugal development, a feature later totally abandoned by Thalberg, favoring his "3 hand" writing for the climactic section.
Gottschalk 'La Gitanella' The American composer and pianist Louis Moreaux Gottschalk is remembered by handful of pieces namely "The Banjo", L'Union, and Bamboula. There are over 100 other magical pieces all containing the wit and natural sense of melody we have come to adore about his music. "La Gitanella" (the gypsy girl) is in "ABA" form. Novel techniques and difficult figurations mimicking gypsy music are enveloped in a minor romantic sound in feminine character. The "A" section opens with a question-answer dance pattern with grace notes, this is followed by some entertaining leaps, closing with a long pause 'silencio' before a final flourish. The "B" section turns to the relative major in a simple song like melody as the dance continues in the accompaniment, the variation adds a rolling middle voice - and was really hard to learn! The "A" section is repeated to concludes the piece.
Schubert Wanderer: The Fantasie in C major, Op. 15 (D. 760) composed in 1822, popularly known as the Wanderer Fantasy, is not really a fantasy in terms of form but rather a revolutionary sonata structure where the movements are connected through interesting interludes thus the whole piece is played without break. The popular title "Wanderer" is usually added because the theme is based on a 8 bar segment form Schubert's own song "Der Wanderer" for voice and piano from 1816. The theme is played in truncated form throughout the piece and in original form in the Adagio movement. The piece was extremely influential, not only in its form, but also in piano technique. Franz Liszt was so obsessed with the piece that he rewrote it with embellishments for piano, two pianos, and for piano with orchestra. Its influence is far reaching, not only in Liszt's works such as the Sonata in b minor S.178 which uses its now universal unified form concept, but many other composers. Alkan's Aesop's Feast variations Op.39#12 might be influenced by the Adagio, and Scherzo Focoso Op.34 uses strikingly similar keyboard novelties as the Wanderer's finale Allegro.
Here is Oxford's translation of the lyrics to the original song from German: From a poem by the same name by Georg Philipp Schmidt (1766-1849)
I come from the mountains;
the valley steams, the ocean roars.
I wander, silent and joyless,
and my sighs for ever ask: Where?
Here the sun seems so cold,
the blossom faded, life old,
and men’s words mere hollow noise;
I am a stranger everywhere.
Where are you, my beloved land?
Sought, dreamt of, yet never known!
The land so green with hope,
the land where my roses bloom,
Where my friends walk,
where my dead ones rise again,
the land that speaks my tongue,
O land, where are you?
I wander, silent and joyless,
and my sighs for ever ask: Where?
In a ghostly whisper the answer comes:
‘There, where you are not, is happiness!’
