Cancer drug history was made last Friday. Enhertu, the blockbuster antibody-drug conjugate discovered by Daiichi Sankyo and co-developed by AstraZeneca, was approved in the U.S. to treat any patient with advanced, HER2-positive cancer, regardless of where the tumor is located in the body.

As the 2008-09 season opened, national pundits widely considered the Tar Heels the hands-down favorite to win the title. But injuries to key players, surprising midseason losses, and formidable ACC competition made the ride bumpier than expected. In the crucial last month of the season, however, a veteran team drew on their experience--and subtle adjustments by coaches and players--to achieve the goal they'd set for themselves after their disappointing defeat in the 2008 Final Four. Through all the fantastical bits of the Adam and Eve story, I read a historical narrative. This narrative, told in ancient Near Eastern, figurative, archetypal language, seems to have real events in mind. This impression helps me make sense of the enduring power of the opening chapters in Genesis. No mere piece of fiction has ever explained the human condition more simply and profoundly than Genesis 3.

Pia:You did. Look. Yes. It was a success story. And the IPO happened in 2018, I think, April or so. It was a, it was a massive success. And the CI challenge was solved through this containerization of the build templates, which really helped us control all CI where we had to comply.

It was at UNO Powell met Betty. Both were recently divorced. He was teaching, she was doing grad work. They married in 1982. Everyone agrees they make a good match. They travel together and enjoy entertaining at their sprawling Keystone neighborhood home, where he often holes up in a study whose impressive library is stocked with volumes on American history (the presidents, the Civil War) and France. Travel is no idle pursuit for him. He researches destinations and prepares itineraries detailing sites and themes, from architecture to art to vineyards. He got in the habit in the service.

With each post I try to give a bit of insight about the project or the subject. Kind of the back story or context to it. My award-winning work has been recognized by my peers at the local, state, and national levels.

Thanks for your note. I have passed it on to Harley. I read your comments over the phone to him and he was quite touched by them. I hope you guys reconnect. Harley and I plan to meet soon to discuss a book he wants me to write about his life story. I look forward to the project.

The story you describe involving Pakula, Minnelli, and The Sterile Cuckoo is fascinating but probably beyond my reach, as it would entail searching for and poring over any primary source materials that exist and trying to get Minnelli and others with knowledge of the situation to go on the record. Unfortunately, Pakula has passed. it sounds like a tall order for someone like myself, who is not in a position to go off on an investigative hunt. Now, if a publisher would provide an advance to cover that kind of thing, then it may be doable. But the real questions would still be: how much information do you presently have as a foundation for such a story? who will talk to help flesh out the story? and who exactly in the magazine publishing world would be interested in such a story? I mean, I would love to read it, and maybe eve write it, but there are probably too many ifs for my tastes.

As told to The Bulwark by more than 20 officials, staffers, contractors, and high-level insiders, the story of Never Back Down’s toxic implosion offers an unusually candid look at the tensions and skulduggery rife in presidential campaigns. High-dollar consultants and Type A personalities knifed each other, often using the media as the blade. Hairline cracks of mistrust broke into compound fractures of headline-grabbing paranoia and recrimination.

Roe became a target early on for Donald Trump and his supporters, who conducted what some called a “psyop” on DeSantis designed to sow mistrust about the consultant. Unreported until now, the super PAC backing South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott secretly fueled the division—chiefly by discovering and leaking a debate advice memo Roe clandestinely penned for DeSantis. It caused major suspicion inside the DeSantis campaign—and between it and the super PAC—about who the leaker was.

There was a “belligerent” August 13 bar dispute involving Roe and assorted Never Back Down officials and Trump supporters. There was the August 17 story of the Roe debate memo for DeSantis. There was the August 31 Roe presentation to donors, in which he suggested DeSantis only had 60 days to catch Trump. After that, the Trump campaign began issuing a daily countdown email that accused Roe of giving DeSantis “The Kiss of Death.” It drove the DeSantis campaign crazy.

His concern about being accused of soaking Never Back Down was so acute that he boasted July 31 to a staffer about leaking campaign finance data to the Washington Post to shape the coverage about the super PAC’s contributions and expenditures. The story made sure to mention, at Roe’s insistence, that there was “a $409,000 in-kind donation to the group from Axiom.”

When Jankowski named Roe as the super PAC’s chief strategist, Cox quit, telling others it was too wired with Axiom employees and was “too much of the Jeff Roe show.” Cox’s departure also followed an ABC News report in May about how he golfed at a Trump-owned course during a controversial Saudi-financed LIV Golf event. Cox allies suspected Axiom of involvement in the story because it had clients opposed to LIV Golf.

“I can’t let you in there by yourself. Everyone’s pissed off about the story,” Jankowski told Fenske. “You confirmed you’re coming over here. People got blindsided and now they’re getting attacked.”

The real culprits were two operatives from Tim Scott’s Trust In the Mission super PAC, which had been trawling the Axiom website in search of just this sort of information hidden by Roe on the web. One of the TIM Pac consultants, Luke Thompson, had firsthand experience with the scenario. He had worked on an Ohio super PAC for J.D. Vance in 2022 and had also posted inside information on a website for the candidate. It was discovered and leaked to Politico by the rival campaign of Josh Mandel, on whose behalf Roe was working.

“The candidate needs to be able to trust the person running the super PAC [to] use good judgment,” said Thompson, who credited a fellow operative for finding the memo on Axiom’s website. “The super PAC director needs to understand the candidate’s worldview and stay inside of it. Communicating legally via public forums isn’t sufficient—and without trust and discipline, it can be counterproductive.”

My background is in product development (e.g. design, engineering, user research), but since we had such a strong product team already I decided to make my focus for this venture be storytelling. I challenged myself to figure out how to explain a novel product, build a brand, and generally get the word out to people we hoped to have as users and customers.

My first real try at this was starting an email newsletter. At the time this was a non-obvious idea, but the timing was perfect: independent writers, Substack, and the newsletter craze in general was just getting started. The early editions of our newsletter were a success at helping tell a larger story, test some ideas (including pricing), and generally keep folks on our waitlist engaged while we tried to get the product in shape. 0852c4b9a8
