Many of the students that I have experience working with are EL Learners on top of math language learners. Here you can see me trying to build bridges between their everyday life use and understanding of "modeling" with the mathematical use.
Engaging Learners (2017)
Here you can see me engaging students in the problem solving that is to come with discovering the quick growth of exponential functions by asking them to make predictions of the solution.
My students work in groups, as it helps to get them talking to one another about math in a low risk environment. I like to do this because my EL Students get opportunities to talk about math in a small group and when called upon to talk about math or share their opinions about math with the entire class, they are more empowered and comfortable in their ideas and suddenly, the high risk of sharing ideas and opinions with the whole class is something they do not fear.
