When emotional engagement becomes overwhelming, draw upon the character's defensive behaviour as an artistic choice.
Emotionally demanding roles require actors to remain deeply connected to their characters in order to sustain truthful performances over extended production periods. The Defence Management cornerstone serves two complementary purposes: it supports sustainable performance by helping actors manage their emotional engagement while remaining fully in character, while simultaneously deepening the psychological complexity of the character.
By identifying and consciously using the character's defensive strategies, actors develop richer, more layered performances while gaining a practical means of regulating their own emotional engagement when the demands of the role become overwhelming. This allows actors to work with greater confidence, creative freedom and emotional safety.
