When the Isle was created, Maleficent knew the fear surrounding those deemed to be too powerful would send many to the island prison. She went willingly and vowed to act as a guardian of the Isle, just as she had the Moors all her life and to avoid the war Auradon had threatened with her daughter Aurora and son-in-law Philip.
But Auradon went one further, they stripped her of her wings again. Each passing day in the darkness triggered memories of the morning she awoke to find her feathers littering the river and her wings gone at the hands of a man she loved. And so, Maleficent grew to resent her Aurora, who it seemed forgot about her now that her mother and father had been resurrected with the villains for the Isle - as a reward for Maleficent going to the isle.
Parents who would then twist her away from the truth she'd grown with, and send the Dark Fae back into hiding in Auradon. The final straw in Maleficent's light came on Evie's sixth birthday, when neither she nor Mal, were invited to the birthday party that the rest of the isle had been invited too. So Maleficent began her reign of terror on the Isle, taking charge of the main territory and becoming the villain they always assumed her to be..
