Painting a room yourself: 6 useful tips!
Painting your house is actually a great job, the color of the walls partly determines the atmosphere in your home and you also quickly see results. Are you someone who quickly has a color? Then you choose a new color very easily and simply start over again. Are you planning to paint your walls yourself? Then there are a number of things to watch out for before you get started.
In this Ideabook we have put together a few useful tips and ideas for you, purely to help you a little way. For example, always provide good preparation, after all this is half the work. In addition, we explain how you can best carry out this job yourself.
Choosing a nice color
If you are planning to paint a room yourself, you will most likely be the first to think about determining and choosing the right color. We do not give you wrong, but also think about choosing the right kind of paint. In general, you can best choose a water-based paint for interior walls, such as latex or acrylic.
The color on your walls determines the appearance of the space to a large extent. Do you want to make a low space optically higher? Then choose, for example, a light ceiling and two dark-colored walls. Do you choose a striking color or do you prefer the natural colors? If you find it difficult to choose the right colors, then you could also choose to use the help of an expert .
Preparing the wall
Obviously it is not convenient to get started in a room that is full of stuff. Make the space as empty as possible, this makes your job a lot easier. Cover furniture and adhesive skirting boards, sockets and window frames well.
In addition, you also need to prepare the surface, the wall. Every surface requires a different preparation and a different way of painting, but they must all be cleaned properly. How do you do this? First make sure it is dry and that there are no old, loose paint residues on it. Then close all (possible) cracks and holes. In some cases your wall needs more preparation, you can read more about this below.
The importance of a primer
You can treat grainy or powdery substrates with a fixative. Do you see soot or damp spots? Then use an insulating agent. Sucking surfaces can be treated with a primer.
In most cases you will also need a primer, but what is the importance of a primer? A primer ensures a better adhesion of the finishing layer, so that the best result is achieved. In addition, it ensures that spots on the subsurface are partly covered. Also not entirely unimportant: when you work with a primer you ultimately need less paint. Particularly when your surface is untreated, when you have closed holes or cracks or when the quality of previous layers of paint is poor, it is advisable to use a primer. Make sure you choose a primer that fits well with your surface.
Do not try to do too much at the same time
Do you not only want to paint the walls but also the ceiling and / or the ground? Then keep to a strict order in order to keep working efficiently. Always start at the ceiling, work it all off with a primer and two final layers and then continue with the walls. Are you also planning to paint window frames? Put this at the top of your list.
Are you planning to take on more rooms? Then work room for room and complete it piece by piece. If you do not have enough light at the end of the day, you just continue with this new project the next day.
After applying the primer you can start with the 'real work', but before you get started, you can of course continue to stir the paint. You do this with a stirring stick made of wood or a special design piece for your drill. In this way you ensure a solid color. First paint the corners and the edges with a (large) brush, then you can get started with the paint roller. Always keep enough paint on your roller, but keep it from dripping off. Work from top to bottom and from left to right, making sure that the imaginary surfaces overlap well. Try to set up each layer at once. Do you have to interrupt in the meantime? Then complete the relevant plane and end in a corner, this way a new attack will be least noticeable.
It is best to dye in daylight, with artificial light it can quickly happen that your faces are overlooked.
Do you want something different once? Then choose to give your wall a special finish. For example, you could opt for blackboard paint, which makes it possible to draw or write with chalk on your walls. Very nice in the hall or in the children's bedroom. This will undoubtedly make your wall a real eyecatcher ! Or choose a wall with an ombre effect! Here you let two or more colors flow seamlessly into each other.
