Our team is one of the 10 finalists of the US DOT inclusive design challenge. The objective of this project is to develop innovative ADS designs that operate at Levels 4 and 5 of automation for people with cognitive disabilities, such as MCI and mild to moderate dementia.
About 16 million people in the US living with cognitive disabilities cannot drive or need to stop driving prematurely due to deficits in speed of processing, memory, attention, judgment, and visuospatial skills. At least 54-78 percent of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia are unfit to drive a vehicle because of their increased risk to roadway safety.
These individuals can take advantage of automated driving systems (ADS) (SAE Levels 4 and 52), that promise to enhance their freedom of movement.
