Time Isn’t Fundamental: Possibly the entire Universe has 'fallen' from a 'time-less' state?
A new way to think about time, gravity, and black holes
We usually think of time as something that simply exists. Seconds tick. Clocks run. The universe moves forward.
But what if time isn’t a basic ingredient of reality at all?
What if time is something that emerges—something that only appears when the universe is allowed to change?
This is the central idea behind a new theoretical framework called the Absolute Medium (AM), which offers a radically different but internally consistent way to understand time, gravity, and even black holes.
The key idea: time is the rate of change
In the Absolute Medium picture, the universe is not built from space and time first.
Instead, it is built from a deep underlying structure—a kind of energetic network that determines which changes are allowed and how fast they can happen.
Time, in this view, is not a background river flowing everywhere.
Time is simply:
How quickly the universe is able to update itself.
If changes are easy, time flows quickly.
If changes are difficult, time slows down.
If no change is possible at all, time stops.
Two sides of reality: static and dynamic
To make this work, the theory separates reality into two roles:
The Static side:
This determines what configurations of the universe are allowed to exist at all.The Dynamic side:
This determines how fast allowed configurations can change.
Time belongs entirely to the dynamic side.
If the static structure tightly restricts change, the dynamic side slows down—and so does time.
Why clocks slow down near massive objects
This immediately explains something we already observe.
Near massive objects like planets, stars, or black holes, clocks run slower.
This has been measured with atomic clocks, satellites, and GPS.
In the Absolute Medium picture, this happens because:
Massive objects create constraints in the underlying energetic network.
These constraints make updates harder.
When updates take longer, clocks tick more slowly.
Time dilation isn’t caused by “warped spacetime.”
It’s caused by restricted change.
Why motion slows time too
The same idea explains why fast-moving clocks run slow.
When something moves very quickly, the energetic network must constantly rearrange itself to allow that motion.
Those rearrangements take effort.
That effort slows the update rate.
Again: slower updates → slower time.
This reproduces the famous time dilation of Einstein’s relativity, but without assuming time as a built‑in dimension.
What happens at a black hole?
This is where the idea becomes especially powerful.
In this theory, there is a maximum level of constraint the energetic network can reach.
When that limit is reached:
No new configuration is allowed.
No update is possible.
The dynamic side shuts off completely.
At that point:
Time stops.
Not slows forever.
Not freezes asymptotically.
It simply halts.
A black hole is not a place where time runs strangely—it is a place where time ends, because nothing inside can change.
This avoids many of the paradoxes that plague black hole physics.
Why time can’t run backward
If time is just the rate of allowed change, then reversing time would mean:
Updates happening before they are allowed.
Effects appearing before causes.
That violates causality.
In the Absolute Medium framework, the mathematics makes this impossible.
Time can slow down.
Time can stop.
But time can never reverse.
Why this matches Einstein—yet predicts something new
In everyday situations, this theory gives the same answers as Einstein’s relativity.
GPS works.
Light bends near stars.
Planets follow the same orbits.
But in extreme environments, like near black hole horizons, the theory predicts small differences—especially in how clocks behave very close to the edge.
These differences are not philosophical.
They are measurable.
Future observations from:
the Event Horizon Telescope (which images black hole shadows),
and ultra‑precise pulsar timing experiments,
may be able to tell which picture is correct.
A new way to think about time
The most important shift is conceptual.
In this framework:
Time is not a thing.
Time is not a dimension you move through.
Time is not woven into spacetime.
Instead:
Time is what change looks like when the universe is allowed to change.
When change is easy, time flows.
When change is hard, time slows.
When change is forbidden, time ends.
Why this matters
This idea doesn’t just reinterpret clocks.
It offers a unified way to think about:
gravity,
motion,
black holes,
and the arrow of time,
all without adding extra assumptions.
Whether this picture turns out to be correct will be decided by experiments—not philosophy.
But if it is correct, it means something profound:
