Sculpture/Artifact: Coffered Ceiling from Zhihuasi (Temple of Transforming Wisdom)

Location: Third Floor, Gallery 339 (On the second floor, walk through the European Art 1100-1500 Medieval to Early Renaissance wing, then turn left to enter Asian Art and continue to the end of the building. Pass into the Ceremonial Tearoom and turn left. Look UP!)

To get to this room/gallery you've been walking awhile and through some very interesting rooms and spaces.

How does your perspective shift when you are looking at this piece on the ceiling?

Typically, art is displayed on the wall or in a glass case, but this is different.

Can you identify a shift in your thinking based on where the art is located?

Further, this ceiling is from a monastery. Have you ever been in a sacred space? What was on that ceiling? How does it compare to this piece from c.1444? What IMPACT does a dragon in the center have on your overall assessment?
