FIMS, or the Four I Multimodal Strategy, is a set of interpretive strategies that emerged from the research conducted to prepare our book, Reimagining Literacy in the Digital Age (2022).
The "four i's" represent an acronym for these interpretive strategies that all begin with the letter "i":
While Experiencing & Consuming Multimodal Texts: Identify > Impact > Influence > Imagine
While Creating & Producing Multimodal Texts: Imagine > Influence > Impact > Identify
But, there is also a version of FIMS for children with age-appropriate language: WOW!
While Experiencing & Consuming Multimodal Texts: What > Observe > Wonder
While Creating & Producing Multimodal Texts: Wonder > Observe > What
We start with reading, consuming or
WHAT, OBSERVE, WONDER
What do you see? What do you hear?
Observe what are you feeling right now as you see and hear.
Wonder... what this text trying show or tell you? Can you pretend with this text?
We continue with producing or
WONDER, OBSERVE, WHAT
Pretend you are going to create something. What are you going to do?
What is the best way to show and tell what you want to say?
How do you want others to feel when they read what you have created?
Can you see people's reactions? Are they seeing and hearing what you wanted them to?
