Teach Elementary School is a place to develop 21st century skills in engaging, rigorous, student-centered classrooms. Teach students are critical thinkers, communicators, collaborators, creators, and world citizens. They are well prepared to excel in their secondary education and will be well on their way to becoming college and career ready by the time they graduate from high school.

Our mission is to provide an alternative choice for parents and students in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Teach Elementary is designed for students whose needs include a rigorous curriculum, the opportunity for challenge and enrichment, an outlet for creativity and individuality, and an atmosphere that promotes leadership, responsibility, collaboration, and independence.

Our vision is to empower our students to become innovators, explorers, lifelong learners, and contributors to a diverse global community. Our school community shares a commitment to provide rich, varied learning opportunities for all students to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and creatively. Teach Elementary is a safe place for students to develop their strengths and the desire and skills to persevere in areas for growth.

A Letter From the Principal

The past year hasn't been the easiest for students, families, and teachers learning and teaching virtually. We were challenged to embrace our innovative spirit and demonstrate the kind of grit we hope our program inspires. Our community rose to the challenge in so many ways. None of it was easy. None of it was ideal. Yet our students and teachers were prepared to use much of the technology required for virtual learning. Many of the tools, such as the Google platform, were tools our students used regularly in their in-person classroom. Teachers popped up their classrooms in a matter of days. Students were productive and learning within a week. Sure, everyone had to learn some new tools like Zoom, but they did. They persevered and stuck with it until their virtual classrooms supported the kind of learning our program delivers. Instead of thinking of all of the things we can't do virtually, the staff at Teach Elementary took a different approach: How can we continue our program elements virtually? While we haven't figured everything out, we are in process of figuring out lots of things! We can't wait to be back together for in-person learning experiences!

Until then, innovate on!

OUR STUDENTS

Students who choose challenge thrive at Teach Elementary. Successful Teach students are ready for, and want, a challenge. Students who have had academic success in reading, writing and mathematics, grasp core curriculum easily, and/or love learning are successful in our program.

While it is an urban legend that Teach is just a pile of homework, in reality the expectations fall within district guidelines. Successful Teach students complete their nightly homework in math, reading, writing and other subjects, and develop organization and project management skills to complete long-term research projects.

It is important for your child’s school to also fit the needs of your family. Our program is enhanced by high parent involvement. Teach parents enjoy supporting our classrooms, elective programs, special projects, community activities, and fundraising. They seek out ways to use their special talents to enrich Teach School. It really does take a village!

Any student in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade who lives within San Luis Coastal Unified School District boundaries may choose to attend Teach, a school of choice.

Our Guiding Principles

  • Challenging, rigorous academics increase student engagement.

  • Innovation and exploration develop students' critical thinking, problem solving and entrepreneurship skills.

  • Leadership begins with students who own their learning.

  • Collaborative work allows students to be leaders and members of a team.

  • Environment nurtures social and emotional well being; all students need to feel they are an important part of the community and are in a safe space to be themselves and take academic risks in order to grow.

  • Awareness of the local and global community puts students in touch with real world problems, builds compassion, and provides opportunities to communicate and connect with authentic audiences.

At Teach, students take deep dives into self-discovery as they experience a wide range of learning opportunities designed to both develop their strengths and challenge them in their areas for growth. Teach, itself, is a dynamic, growing entity because of the creative influence of our students, teachers, parents and community. We encourage change because Teach is a place for all of us to learn, dream, create, and grow.
