Community

Fostering partnerships with our community helps our school grow and connects our students to the world around them. Experts in the field have helped us develop a robotics program and a Native Garden and have provided a variety of elective course opportunities for our students.  Our parents are an integral part of our program

During Global Awareness Week we combine Cultural Awareness, Geography, Engineering, and Earth Day to connect students to their world in meaningful ways.

Engaging students in service learning helps develop an awareness of our place in the local community and the wider global community. We intentionally seek opportunities to give back to the community that supports our school.

Teach students and their families give back to the community: Holiday Gifts for San Luis Coastal Homeless and Foster Youth, SLO Marathon Aid Station, Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County Holiday Party.

Each year, the fourth grade students design and manufacture items to sell at the annual MiniMall - a chance for kids (and adults) to purchase inexpensive, creative items as gifts for family and friends. This project-based learning unit allows students to learn about economics and entrepreneurship, while developing an understanding of giving back to the community.

In December 2017, 4th Grade MiniMall earned $1,328 for the Red Cross to benefit Thomas Fire victims, as reported in the San Luis Obispo Tribune. In December 2018, 4th Grade MiniMall earned $2,000 for Jack's Helping Hand, as reported in the San Luis Obispo Tribune. In December 2019, our 4th Grade MiniMall earned $2,005 for Jack's Helping Hand. In December 2020, faced with an unprecedented situation, our 4th grade students were determined to continue the mini-mall project. Teach 4th grade students crafted projects at home and our teachers popped up an online store for holiday shopping. Including generous direct donations from Teach families, the 4th Mini-Mall project donated more than $2700 to the SLO Foodbank to help them reach their end of year goal. In 2021, our students were back to in-person learning and shopping. They raised $1700 for Jack's Helping Hand. This past December, they raised more than $2000 for the American Cancer Society to benefit children with cancer. This legacy project has taught students how to care about others and how to make a difference in our community.
