ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
"Kear teaches CIVE 412: Infrastructure Engineering in Indigenous Communities at UVic. It's a community-based project course for 4th year Civil Engineering students. Kear brings his personal and professional experience as well as professional network to the class to show students what working with First Nations is like first-hand.
Throughout the course Kear provides different lessons on systems and policies that First Nations work within as well as cultural training. Ultimately, this is a project-based course and Kear organizes projects with local First Nations in the Victoria-region; the students work directly with Nations to complete projects that have real impact for these communities.
Kear will go over some of the basic challenges and successes with the course as well as some of the gaps in the engineering profession, as it relates to Indigenous People, communities and representation."
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Kear Porttris is a MĂ©tis-Chinese Indigenous engagement professional who was trained as a civil engineer. He also teaches at UVic, where he is an adjunct professor teaching CIVE 412: Infrastructure Engineering in Indigenous Communities.
He brings his experience of working within Community to academia by exposing 4th year civil engineering students to what working with First Nations is like. It's a community project course that pairs students with community to help tackle projects that matter to the communities.
