I'm curious to how other people have their sessions set up. Where is the best place to put your looper? Is there any easy way to create multiple variations of loops and switch back and forth between them (Like multiple drum loops on a track and trigger different clips)?

The simplest answer would be, use the Ableton Looper device! Yes, but no. I find that the looper is really usable only if you only need 2 or 3 loops in your live. But it has the advantage of being standard in all versions of Ableton Live.

Another cool device is the One button Live looper, which you may find similar to a Boss RC505. You just need to MIDI map only one button to get it working, and record up to 10 layers with one looper device.

Hello, I play the guitar in a postrock band ( ) and we usually play live with a computer (for click and backtracks purposes).

Some part of our set are incredibly difficult to play with just 2 guitarists and I always wanted to be able to have a looper to record some phrases, synced to our click.

Since we are using a computer and the Kemper does have a looper in it, I educated myself about the NRPN midi stuff and found out how to automate the looper all synced up with any tracks we play.

I wanted to share it here because the journey to make it work was hugely difficult and I think I might not be the only person wanting to do this.

In order to automate the Kemper looper you'll need 2 mandatory things :

Then you'll have to set your envelopes controls as shown in the image NRPN 2

The rest is pretty much explicit on how to trigger the different modes of you kemper looper !

Let me know if it works for you !

PS : Note that it also means you can automate about anything in your Kemper and make your life easier if you play live with a computer !

i also support this request . ( Studio one , please please , add live looping feature , i love studio one and don't want to switch to another DAW , I've download Ableton and Bitwig just because i need live looping feature , i spent days and hours discovering their looping launchers , but even they are not perfect like what expect , I believe only studio one can built this feature butter than any other compotators .

Loop4Live is a midi footswitch dedicated to Ableton Live (9.6 or higher) that offers a new way to control your computer. Loop4Live turns your PC/Mac into a looper station, without the need to access a monitor (or a mouse): All the main features are available on Loop4Live thanks to a large screen, ring leds, 10 footswitches and 5 rotary encoders.

Launch your loops and samples to follow your training, your arrangement or your band on stage. Fire your record to create new loops : you can then rearrange your work on the computer to create a whole song. Why not share this work to let your band hear this wonderful new song ? Records are stored on the computer : an automatic synchronization in the cloud offers access for different people or for a second computer used in rehearsal, or in live !

Im hoping to use Cakewalk by bandlab for making Live loops on the fly. Reason being is because I don't want to have to buy Ableton to do so. I'm hoping to also upgrade matrix view in order to record an audio or midi loop and add it straight to a matrix cell. So far matrix view works perfectly for samples and prerecorded samples but not so much for instant loops made on a midi controller or a recorded instrument. At the moment is making a live groove clip but sometimes it doesnt sync in well and theres no way to quickly add the groove into a cell without dragging it or going to audio library. Im hoping there can be a feature to record straight into a cell. (Youtube video example below)

I also feel a tempo "link to controller" feature would work pefectly so you can slow down and speed up the song during a live looping session. Matrix view in itself is very underused and underrated with the sheer power you have as a beatmaker. But for the livelooping scene, It still needs a bit more upgrades to make it a Powerhouse.

Most things are already possible but just the specific live looping portions like: Setting up a live loop to a Cell and also linking it to a Cell with a midi controller isnt there yet, changing the tempo. Also to make Sound over Sound happen you have to press P then activate instead of a simple button to make that happen. (in this video it's called Overdub)

Also another suggestion is having a specific shortcut that allows you to switch tracks which I notice as well is not present in Cakewalk by Bandlab. (There is Add a new track, Duplicate etc.) but no button to switch the track or a shortcut to arm selected track without arming every track. (unless you click on the track which takes time if you are live looping)

I'm far from an expert on it, but I think that after the inclusion of a stock sampler, updating Matrix View to allow live recording to cells would be something that could kick Cakewalk into gear for Ableton/FL Studio type live improvisation workflows.

Looper is great for looping live audio, but is a little redundant for recording MIDI loops in realtime - since the built-in ableton live controls are a little more flexible. The challenge for me has always been seamlessly looping, overdubbing, and riffing in real-time and since I'm a keyboardist using both hands, the footpedal was the only way to go.

The Kid Beyond video is mentioned above- he most assuredly was not using looper as the video was made before Ableton HAD looper and is much of the reason they MADE looper. The way Kid Beyond does it is utilizing another program called Bome's Midi Translator Pro (Midi OX is a similar prog, but Bome's is rather unique) which is kind-of like a virtual midi patch bay but FAR more. Ableton used to link to a tutorial on how to do it (how often do you see Ableton referencing any third-party software?) but they went ahead and made Looper which does some CRAZY stuff the Kid Beyond way couldn't (without Max, at least :) ) so they likely don't have the link anymore. However, Bome's site has an tut @ =1583

Live looping is the process of creating and using looped sounds during a live performance to perform along with. A live loop can be a drum track, layered guitars, vocals or any combination of looped sounds.

wim, what I want to do is from the midi keyboard, record in some playing via MIDI in, and then save that as a loop in a looper so I can build tracks etc, rather than a DAW...DAW's are not really live tools.

I thought from the Loopy Pro intro it could do it but nope it cannot...hence asking if there is a MIDI one....MIDI Looper Live can, in that it records your midi data and then you can assign it out to a synth (or drum app, NOT a drumming app, a drum sound app)....then build up more layers (again in a live setting) with say a bass line and then playinb live keys over the top of that.

All of the above apps can be used for that. Maybe not exactly how you're picturing though. LK, and Helium are probably the most intuitive. My gut tells me what you're looking for is more like a hardware midi looper than these though.

As far as I know that's not possible, and Logic can't really be substituted for a looper pedal, as you can't record new "layers" of audio without first setting up the tracks for all the layers you're going to want to record.

Agreed this is frustrating - when Logic has something called Live Loops that can't be used for live looping. It's a glaring omission in my opinion, especially when MainStage has the LoopBack plugin - also v frustrating that this is not available in Logic Pro. See this feature request:

To be honest Loopback is itself under-featured compared to 3rd party offerings and the Looper in Ableton (which actually works like a loop pedal for live looping) so Apple have some pretty obvious gaps to fill here!

Hey mate, I was going to make a video on how I set it up, but I am still not satisfied with my results. I did get it work though, but Mainstage's looper is just bad! xD

I should mention that I am looking to do an ambient guitar style live looping setup.

There are many ways to do live looping (via Ableton, or physical setup, or Mainstages noob ways), just depends on what you are looking for.

I really appreciate your comment. I came from using a Boomerang Looper (which cost now over $500), so spending $100 or whatever on a solid software looper is very reasonable for me.

I did watch quite a few tutorials on both loopers you recommended; and tbh, I love the look of the Enso, but the MSuperLooper is just so good and simple in comparison! It's actually the closes Software Looper I have found in comparison to the Boomerang.

I will give it a trial tonight and see how I go with it

Thanks again for your response, super helpful!

Just leaving an update here incase anyone is viewing this thread:

I decided to give MSuperLooper a try. It does have some cool features and the layout is awesomely simple! The problem is the community is quite small so finding workarounds/ receiving help for the software is difficult.

I also couldn't figure out how to record into loops and have my DAW record the loops while I am playing it live; it may be a feature that exists but as @thirdspacementioned "it is just super unintuitive".

Not just that it is unintuitive; it also costs over $100, which you could easily pay for Abletons basic package which should do even better as a loop station.

Anyway, I will now be sending Apple a feature request, and I really hope they listen because a lot of people are definitely interested in this!

If you have time, do the same so that they can see more people are interested in Live Looping/ recording.
