The Applied Biotechnology Lab for Environment (ABLE) at UNIST researches advanced waste-to-value biotechnologies for a more sustainable future. We focus on bio(electro)chemical conversion of solid, liquid, and gaseous waste streams into valuable energy sources and materials, including biogas, hydrogen, organic acids, biodegradable plastic, and microbial protein. Through interdisciplinary approaches combining microbiology, molecular biology, bioprocess engineering, and electrochemistry, we analyze, develop, and refine waste valorization processes. Additionally, we study microbial diversity, functions, and interactions through ecophysiological research to gain deeper insights into these processes.
