Researcher | Learner | Teacher

Hello. I am Abhijeet Acharjee Jeet, an incoming graduate student in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech. Previously, I have completed my undergraduate from the Department of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). After graduation,I served as a faculty member (Lecturer) at the Department of Civil Engineering, United International University (UIU), Dhaka. I am a passionate learner of science. I believe that one can learn more effectively by either teaching or indulging in good research works.

My primary field of interest revolves around Geotechnical Engineering. More specifically, I like to work on geotechnical earthquake engineering, geotechnical site characterization, computational geotechnics, and highway or hill slope protection. I keep special interest in analyzing seismic waves to better understand earthquake induced ground phenomena. Furthermore, I have a desire to integrate machine learning with geotechnical engineering practices. Since I have a good command over Python and R, I want to use available Python libraries or R packages effectively for easing up geotechnical research works and construction practices. I have worked on slope stability related research works with MD. Azijul Islam and Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam – two faculty members of my university.

I have conducted my undergraduate thesis, which is mainly on the liquefaction phenomenon of soil under the supervision of Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary and Dr. Abu Siddique. Geohazards like earthquakes and landslides have always fascinated me. Therefore, I have opted to work on such a topic that is closely related to the earthquake. I want to dig deeper into the factors behind these geohazards so that I can contribute to reducing the suffering and losses of lives in such catastrophic events by ensuring preparedness.

Apart from all these, I love teaching. During my short teaching career, I enjoyed interacting with the undergraduate students of civil engineering. I gathered some teaching skills during that period. I am also a geography geek and love traveling to different places.

I want to see myself as a successful researcher and teacher in the future. My focus is on doing quality research works that will contribute to the existing knowledge domain of humankind positively and will make human lives easier and better.
