I was born June 4th, 2001 at Newton Medical Center during a tornado. Because my first experience on this Earth involved terrifying weather I still, as a 17-year-old almost adult, have a major fear of storms. I went to St. Mary's Catholic school until the second grade, when I was diagnosed with Dyslexia. That was ten years ago, but I have vivid memories of being tested, moving schools, and starting the special education program. My new school, Walton Rural Life Center, was different than any other school I had seen before. They had a greenhouse and animals; I had no idea how big of an impact that school would make on me at that time.

At Walton, I was part of smaller class sizes and received special education in the form of extra reading, spelling, and grammar lessons. My special ed teacher and I had a really great relationship. All the memories I have of the extra help I received are excellent and because of that, instead of falling behind, I worked harder to excel and then in the fifth grade, my IEP was removed. This was an epic moment for me. I had proved to my teachers, parents and myself that I was conquering dyslexia; however, there was one area of my life in which dyslexia never hampered my abilities--singing.

This dream stayed with me until middle school and then morphed into something new. In the eighth grade, I took my first drama class, and it changed my life. When I graduate from high school, I will have participated in seven productions. Being in school plays has taught me to be a team player and how to manage my time efficiently.

To gain a greater understanding of what the health field had to offer, I took the Health Science 3 class and did over 30 hours of job shadowing in various health fields. This journey has lead me to find the perfect bridge between theater and medicine: surgery. Surgeons have to be meticulous, prepared, and passionate. They spend years preparing for their opening night and practice their act until it is perfected. Sometimes mistakes happen, and they have to improvise.

I may not change the world of the arts with my voice or acting abilities, but I can now focus on making an impact in the world of medicine.
