S.T.E.M. SAVVY Symposium was inspired by longtime AAUW member, Mary Sue Sickafus, as a way to inspire Downriver girls to pursue careers in STEM studies.
Since 2014, AAUW Wyandotte-Downriver has organized and conducted an annual symposium for middle school girls from all 19 Downriver school districts. The girls come for a day of immersion in STEM related activities presented by inspirational women speakers.
Our speakers are all women working in STEM related occupations: pilots, race car drivers, pharmacists, neonatal nurses, veterinarians, chemists, engineers, artists, architects, accountants and more. They come to share their expertise with these young students in seminar sessions throughout the day while hoping to inspire young women to focus on the rewarding occupations to be found in STEM fields.
It is our particular point of pride to offer this day of STEM immersion without charge to the participating girls and their chaperones. Donations from members, their families, local merchants, and AAUW Wyandotte-Downriver help to cover all expenses. Our AAUW Affiliate members actively manage the logistics of the day as well as the months of planning needed to organize the symposium. It is a labor of love for all who participate.
