Our Work in National Context
Tennessee’s 2022 anti-CRT law governing K-12 education has been expanded to higher education settings. The Tennessee Higher Education Freedom of Expression and Transparency Act allows students to charge professors with teaching “divisive concepts”. The American Historical Association, together with 150 other academic associations, including the AAUP, identified what it called “the clear goal” of the law: “to suppress teaching and learning about the role of racism in the history of the United States.” Read more here.
You may have read about departmental closings and layoffs of faculty and staff at the University of West Virginia (UWV). Gordon Gee, UWV’s president, said that the cuts in areas such as world languages, linguistics, and humanities (among others) “are essential to free up resources for programs in higher demand such as forensics, engineering and neuroscience” (Anderson, 2023). The Boston Review published an open letter by faculty, which you can read here.
