Upcoming in our AAUP Chapter
AAUP will be hosting a Legislative Forum on Friday Feb 23 at 5:00 in the Reflector in Townsend Hall. We’ll hear from local representatives serving in the Missouri legislature including Kathy Steinhoff about bills related to education proposed for the 2024 session, and we can share questions and opinions with them.

Faculty Council considers changing faculty designations
In line with other universities (e.g., Northwestern, U Maryland), Faculty Council is considering changing the term “Non Tenure Track/NTT” professors to “Professional Track” for research, teaching, and clinical professors. Our AAUP chapter supports this change because it recognizes these faculty members for what they do and what they are, rather than identifying them by what they aren’t. AAUP members/supporters might consider contacting their FC reps to voice opinions on this potential change.
Our Work in National Context
Unionization and strikes surge in higher education: 11 new faculty collective bargaining units emerged in 2022-2023, as compared with 30 new graduate student collective bargaining units.
AAUP has released a new statement on political interference in higher education, highlighting restrictions on academic freedom and weakening faculty power, recommending that faculty “build governmental relations capacity” and learn about upcoming legislation related to higher education. Our upcoming Legislative Forum and Advocacy Day in Jeff City in March speak to these needs!
