ICYMI
On Feb 23, AAUP hosted a Legislative Forum, co-sponsored by MU’s Graduate and Professional Council (GPC) and Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM). We heard from local representatives Kathy Steinhoff and David Tyson Smith about bills related to education proposed for the 2024 session. They highlighted SB749 (removing UM’s exclusive right to grant doctoral degrees) and SB1075 (increasing the number of credits transfer students could bring to public universities) as two bills relevant to Mizzou.
Our Work in National Context
University of Pennsylvania’s AAUP chapter held a protest of the administration's attempts to quash academic freedom and speech.
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), which the AAUP is affiliated with, has adopted a resolution pressing for the “End of the Israel-Hamas War by Negotiated Bilateral Cease-Fire, Promoting Steps Toward a Two-State Solution for Israeli and Palestinian Self-Determination.”
Alabama passed a comprehensive anti-DEI bill targeting public schools at all level as well as state agencies.
Indiana passed a law that can be used to revoke tenure for professors who “don’t promote intellectual diversity.”
