Small Steps Forward for Shared Governance
Provide Feedback on Salary Recovery Policy to Faculty Council on this survey, through April.
Faculty Council recruited faculty for the Research Administration Committee for Modernization (RACM); this committee was not initially intended to include faculty, so we are glad to see there will be representation thanks for FC’s efforts.
UM Scraps Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Statements for Job Applicants
In light of the Missouri legislature considering bills to “prevent ideological discrimination in higher education,” as well as pressure from conservative journalists/bloggers, Mun Choi released a new “values commitment” statement request that would be required in all job applications. Follow IDE-related legislation nationwide with this tracker from the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Faculty Council Votes to…
add text to the Provost website on syllabus statements, regarding the right to teach a class only in person
extend test-optional Freshman admissions
process course evaluations immediately after classes end, regardless of course length (e.g., 4-week classes will have evaluations ready immediately).
Our Work in National Context
Rutgers Faculty on Strike On March 10, 94% of Rutgers faculty voted to authorize a strike to ensure fair labor contracts.
Attacks on HE in Florida The AAUP has “appointed a special committee to review an apparent pattern of politically and racially motivated attacks on higher education” in Florida’s colleges and universities that threatens “academic freedom and shared governance in those institutions and undermined the very role of higher education’s essential to a functioning democracy.”
New Era of Union Activism in HE James Thelan, of Inside Higher Ed, identifies a “new era of Union Activism in Higher Ed” citing January’s strike at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of California, and Temple University, as well as numerous other colleges and universities. The concerns of activists were found to be largely off the radar of higher education leaders, though.
