Recruiting College-Level AAUP Ambassadors & Liaisons
Are you well-informed about what’s going on in your college, and would you be willing to share information with AAUP leadership? Consider volunteering to be a AAUP Liaison for your college. This is NOT a public role; contact our Gmail above to volunteer.
Are you enthusiastic about AAUP’s national work and optimistic about what our chapter can achieve on campus? Consider volunteering to be an AAUP Ambassador to help recruit folks in your college and strengthen our chapter. This IS a public role; contact our Gmail above to volunteer.

ICYMI
On April 10, the Provost (through a consultant) sent out an email to STEM faculty titled “Requesting Your Participation and Perspective,” which contains an addition to the COACHE survey that focuses on departmental and institutional climate, and especially on whether or not faculty support IDE efforts in hiring. This survey was caught by some people’s spam filters, so you may need to search for it. Please fill this out and (anonymously) make your voice heard using the unique link you were sent!
The video of the Spring 2023 General Faculty Meeting has been posted.
Choi noted projected enrollment was up 10%, and there had been a 7% increase in UM’s core budget in the Governor’s proposed budget.
Choi defended his decision to eliminate any requirement to submit IDE statements with job applications by saying that he was trying to protect other IDE programs at Mizzou. He pointed to lack of clarity in HB 1196 around what kind of funding, if any, could be used for IDE initiatives. He also noted the recent FIRE Survey which showed that nationwide, faculty are divided about requiring IDE statements; he assented to FC Chair Graham Macauley’s suggestion that a similar survey could be repeated in the UM system.
Our Work in National Context
Rutgers University instructors represented by the AAUP-AFT and other unions went on strike on April 10 due to lack of progress in contract negotiations.
The AAUP has released a “data snapshot” of the academic workforce, which indicates that contingent faculty occupy two-thirds of current positions, and that women and under-represented minorities are overrepresented among these contingent faculty.
The AAUP has filed a brief supporting the University of Michigan’s firearms prohibition, which is being challenged. Bills have previously been filed in Missouri that would allow guns on campus, but have not yet passed. Here’s a summary of Missouri gun laws.
