The design was for a student film festival organisation. The organisation hosts an annual awards ceremony and required a website for interested parties to submit their nominations. The organisation believed that interested parties would like an online nomination form – this could be to submit a nomination on behalf of someone or to submit one for themselves.

My key challenge was identifying the best users to include in the usability studies, while ensuring that these users are a good representation of the general public.

My key learning is the value of usability studies. I was able to gather numerous valuable insights from a diverse range of users which allowed me to improve the designs.
I began by analyzing the types of nominations AIFF had received in the past, based on data the organization shared with me. I then developed interview questions which I then used to conduct user interviews to gather insights about customer preferences for film festival websites.

The primary user groups were identified as film students and film enthusiasts who are keen on such film festivals. My primary assumption was to see if customers would like an option to submit online nominations and if they would like to nominate themselves for awards as well. Based on the research, these assumptions were validated.

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for the overall website layout and the nomination form application process. (shown in the paper sketches above). After ideating further, I drew up a sitemap to guide the organizational structure of the web design. I then created the initial designs for the film festival website. These digital wireframes shown below focus on the award nomination process.

Usability studies were conducted to test the low-fidelity prototype with target users. Feedback from the usability studies helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups.

Mockups were designed to view the complete appointment booking process. High-fidelity prototypes were also created for the user flows to view the website and submit a nomination form.
