Bereft of the Dark One's influence, the Blight dissolves. Mat reunites with Tuon, who reveals that she is pregnant by him; whereas Perrin locates Faile buried under Trolloc corpses, but alive, and inherits the throne of Saldaea. King Alsalam of Arad Doman is revealed to be dead, and Ituralde succeeds him. Cadsuane Melaidhrin is elected the new Amyrlin Seat, while Moghedien is captured by a sul'dam. Thom and Moiraine, Lan and Nynaeve, wait attendance on Rand, who is slowly dying of his wounds. A funeral pyre is held; but it is revealed that Rand had exchanged psyches with Moridin, and is therefore alive in Moridin's body while Moridin, in Rand's body, is burned in the funeral pyre. No longer able to channel the One Power, Rand now has the ability to manipulate the Pattern directly, though it is unclear to what extent. He demonstrates this ability by lighting his pipe without the use of the One Power.

"I asked about the events before, Perrin. I asked after what happened, but I did not ask after the people it happened to." He looked at Perrin, making a globe of light for them to see by as they walked in the night. "I need to remember the people. Not doing so is a mistake I have made too often in the past."

The battle rages back and forth, with Mat sending out orders from his command post. It becomes quickly apparent that the Shadow have a spy embedded in his command structure, forcing him to discard the battle plan and improvise against superior forces. Demandred arrives in power, at the head of a full circle of seventy-two linked channelers and bearing a Power-amplifying sa'angreal, and begins tearing apart the forces of the Light, starting with the "Dragon" cannons that Mat had placed on the high ground. To lure Demandred into over-committing, Mat stages a public falling-out with Tuon, and the Seanchan depart the field. Perrin, though exhausted, receives Healing and returns to the World of Dreams to continue his pursuit of Slayer. At Shayol Ghul, Aviendha and the other Aiel defenders find their lives complicated when Graendal takes the field against them. And a critical piece of cargo--The Horn of Valere, currently in care of Faile Aybara with orders to deliver it to Mat--accidentally goes astray in the Blight, forcing Faile to improvise.

Outside the Pattern, Shai'tan shows Rand a blighted world to try and break him. Rand then shows Shai'tan a world where humanity has defeated the Shadow and flourished. Shai'tan then shows Rand a world that appears quite prosperous - but looking closer Rand discovers that the people there have no compassion at all. Finally, Rand shows Shai'tan a world where Shai'tan is entirely absent. This world appears to be a utopia, but when he meets Elayne's counterpart there he realises she is 'broken' in some way - while she is good and compassionate she appears 'hollow'. He asks Shai'tan what it has done to this world, and Shai'tan confronts him with the truth: he has done nothing to it. Just as Shai'tan stripping the good out of people diminishes them, so Rand removing Shai'tan - and so stripping the evil out - will diminish them too.

Bereft of the Dark One's influence, the Blight dissolves. Mat reunites with Tuon, who reveals that she is with child. Perrin, racked with guilt over his decision to help Rand and abandon his wife, continues to search for her, eventually finding her buried under Trolloc corpses but still alive. Loial attempts to track down the two of them to get statements for his book. Cadsuane Melaidhrin is elected the new Amyrlin Seat, to her horror, while Moghedien, now one of two remaining Forsaken, is captured by a sul'dam who is exploiting loopholes in the Dragon's Peace. Hessalam is last seen as a victim of Compulsion and worshipping Aviendha. Thom and Moiraine, Lan and Nynaeve, have all come to wait attendance on Rand, who is slowly dying of his wounds even after Nynaeve and Moiraine pulled him and Moridin out of the Bore, and Perrin suggests summoning Elayne, Min and Aviendha as well to pay their last respects.

I am 18 and have read physical books my entire life. My bookshelf is my favorite thing about my room. But I am not wary of switching to a Kindle for reasons of attachment nor emotions. I dont care about that. (I read only fiction) So I just bought a Kindle and it is convenient and I enjoy it. But I have done hours of research and have come to the understanding that ebooks lack in memory retention when compared to physical books. This makes sense as an ebook utilizes less senses when reading vs a books which has smell, touch, you can see how many pages you have left, you can hear the pages ruffle, and... taste. No, I dont taste my books. Also, I have read that ebooks, due to them being a screen, can cause the brain to want to "skim" read or "light read" which disallows you from deep-reading which physical books allow.

SO, my question is, have any of you previously physical book lovers noticed you have trouble remembering character names, plot points in chronological order, or had to go back and reread passages any more on an ebook than on the physical copy?????

"Let's say you see a great white shark and you are scared and your brain wants to form a memory of what's going on. You have to make new proteins to encode that memory," explains Hoeffer. One of the first proteins to be employed is AKT, which serves as a switch that activates the memory factory.

Looking at the Kindle side-by-side next to the PRS-700, it quickly became clear that the Kindle's screen is easier to read. Both backgrounds are grayish, but the Kindle's appears as a lighter gray (more white in it) and the letters appear blacker. The other thing I noticed is that the PRS-700's screen isn't as glare resistant as the Kindle's (both catch a little glare from certain angles, but the PRS-700 catches a lot more).

The PRS-700's screen is still quite readable and if you didn't have the PRS-505 or Kindle to stick next to it, you'd probably say, "This looks all right." And if there's one positive, the letters on the PRS-700 look slightly smoother and more filled in. But that Sony couldn't retain the contrast levels of its previous model and introduced glare issues is quite unfortunate.

As noted, this model incorporates an LED "reading light." It's not a backlight; rather, it's more like side-lighting (some call it front-lighting but the LEDs are placed on the sides of the display), and you can increase and lower the intensity between two levels of brightness or just turn it off.

We had mixed emotions about the light. The lighting isn't terribly uniform over the display but it will allow you to read your Reader in the dark. So, it's one of those features you appreciate is there (and you will use it), but at the same time, you'd like to see it implemented a little better. In terms of energy, LEDs are very efficient, but obviously, they still draw some power and having the light on will have an impact on your battery life. If you're doing a lot of reading at night, Sony also sells the optional Flex-Neck LED Reading Light PRS-LIGHT01 ($15) attachable nightlight.

The PRS-700 also has an annotation and notes feature. With the included stylus--or your finger--you can highlight words and add annotations via a virtual keyboard that you tap on. The Kindle offers this feature via a Blackberry-style hard keyboard, but some argue that the Kindle's keyboard just isn't all that useful, takes up too much real estate, and elongates that device unnecessarily. The virtual touch keyboard seems like a good compromise, especially given that it'll be used a lot less than one on a dedicated e-mailing device.

It's worth noting that the PRS-700's touch screen isn't as touch-sensitive as the screen on the iPhone and several other new cell phones. How does this affect usage? Well, you've got to take extra care when highlighting a word or phrase with the stylus; it's easy to undershoot or overshoot the word. And until you get the hang of swiping, you may end up swiping more than once to turn a page. The key is to press more firmly on the screen than you're used to (if you've ever had a device that has a touch screen).

As noted, this model doubles the amount of internal memory from 128MB to 256MB, which allows you to store around 300 books. Another way to access content is to transfer it to an SD or Memory Stick Duo card and slip it in the Reader's expansion slot. However, you can only download encrypted Sony eBooks using the desktop software; likewise, only the software can be used to organize the titles into customized collections. So, if you're a Mac user, the device probably isn't worth buying.

For a long time I used to go to bed early. Sometimes, when I had put out my candle, my eyes would close so quickly that I had not even time to say "I'm going to sleep." And half an hour later the thought that it was time to go to sleep would awaken me; I would try to put away the book which, I imagined, was still in my hands, and to blow out the light; I had been thinking all the time, while I was asleep, of what I had just been reading, but my thoughts had run into a channel of their own, until I myself seemed actually to have become the subject of my book: a church, a quartet, the rivalry between Franois I and Charles V. This impression would persist for some moments after I was awake; it did not disturb my mind, but it lay like scales upon my eyes and prevented them from registering the fact that the candle was no longer burning. Then it would begin to seem unintelligible, as the thoughts of a former existence must be to a reincarnate spirit; the subject of my book would separate itself from me, leaving me free to choose whether I would form part of it or no; and at the same time my sight would return and I would be astonished to find myself in a state of darkness, pleasant and restful enough for the eyes, and even more, perhaps, for my mind, to which it appeared incomprehensible, without a cause, a matter dark indeed. be457b7860
