Van Gogh and Gauguin worked together for a long time. However, their relationship deteriorated as Van Gogh failed to share the expenses and chores of the house they shared. One day, Van Gogh allegedly threatened Gauguin with a knife, who immediately left the premises. Van Gogh, finding himself alone and in a fit of madness, cut off a piece of his left ear with a razor before wrapping it in newspaper and taking it as a gift to a prostitute he regularly frequented, a certain Rachel. This would be the last time the two would see each other.
