The estranged cousin of Whamageddon, Mariahpocalypse ups the holiday ante by struggling to avoid themost popular Christmas song out there throughout the entire Christmas season, 1994’s ubiquitous “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.
Beware, this is a marathon for the most dedicated and battle-hardened competitors.
THE RULES
Rule 1: The Prime Directive
Go as long as possible without hearing Mariah Carey’s modern Christmas classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
Rule 2: Game Duration
The game starts on Black Friday (the day after American Thanksgiving, which in 2021 is November 26th), and goes through Christmas Day, ending at midnight December 26th (Boxing Day for many). The dates and times are based on your local time zone.
Rule 3: Specifics
Only the original 1994 version applies. As with that other game, enjoy covers and remixes to your heart's content.
Rule 4: Game Over, Man
As soon as you recognize the original song, you’re out of the game and "Carey"ed away to do time in Yule Lockup until the end of Christmas. Post on your social media platform of choice with an account of how you were taken out along with the #mariahpocalypse hashtag.
Mariahpocalpyse Code of Conduct
You can't win a game of dodgeball if you're never on the court. Wearing headphones constantly or avoiding TV, radio, or streaming channels altogether is no way to spend the holidays. Take precautions, beware of ambushes, but the fun of the game comes from the risk.
There are plenty of threats during the Christmas season that can wallop you like an ice-filled snowball, so if you do choose to set booby-traps for your friends, consider yourself Krampus fodder.
This is still a game, so have fun, good luck, and may god have mercy on your wretched souls.
