Director’s Notes

When I was in the sixth grade, my Amatxi (Grandma) began to lose her memory and suddenly, my family and I were the ones having to care for her. She forgot what day of the week it was, how to read, and eventually, my name and who I was to her. It’s the strangest feeling-watching someone you love slowly disappear, reverting into an almost childlike state.

Especially when you yourself are still a child. I think both Eurydice and her father can relate to that.

For a long time, I was angry. I just wanted to have my Amatxi take care of me again. I focused on all the moments she would miss, all the things we would lose as her memory slowly decayed.

Sarah Ruhl wrote this show after watching her father’s battle with cancer. She writes about her experience learning how to be a caregiver and a daughter through Eurydice. That feeling of not having ‘the right kind’ of care is one that I’m sure she has felt too. Perhaps everyone has at some time or another.
