Question: What is the difference between engineering program in the field of computers like B.E. (Computer Systems) and other non-engineering programs.
Answer: There is a big difference in engineering degree programs like B.E. (Computer Systems) and other non-engineering degree programs in the computer domain. The title B.E. refers to ‘Bachelor of Engineering’ and in Pakistan only Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) accredited departments can offer B.E. programs. Some institutions are offering engineering degrees with title BS in Engineering or BSc in Engineering with proper PEC accreditation. The graduate will get the membership of Pakistan Engineering Council and can write Engr. with the name only after completing an engineering degree from an accredited institution. However, the eligibility criteria to get admission in B.E. (Computer System) is much higher and you can apply for admission only if you have 60% or higher marks in HSC.
Question: Can I work as Software Engineer after getting B.E. (Computer Systems) Engineering Degree?
Answer: Yes. Why Not. Many computer engineers are working in software industry as software engineer, senior software engineer and lead software engineer in Pakistan and abroad.
Question: Is B.E. (Computer Systems) program accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC)?
Answer: Yes. B.E. (Computer Systems) program at FEST, Hamdard University, Karachi is accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
Question: Why engineering graduates with B.E. (Computer Systems) degree have more advanced skills.
Answer: Engineering graduates in the field of computers have different attributes due to their rigorous training of solving complex engineering problems and performing complex engineering activities in problem based learning domain throughout four years’ degree course. In the field of computers, B.E. (Computer Systems) program contains advanced courses related to both software and information systems like object oriented programming, software engineering, web engineering, database management systems, artificial intelligence, software project management, robotics, electronic circuits, computer hardware, signals, modeling and simulation, advanced mathematics, embedded systems etc. Due to these advanced courses they got exceptional skills to work on latest computer applications and systems involving artificial intelligence and machine learning, electronic devices and sensors, hardware, actuators and machines, databases and internet etc. In fact, they are supposed to have all skills of circuits, signal processing, software programming, databases, internet, computer networking, modeling and simulation, hardware and firmware etc. that enable them to undertake the challenges of the modern era of computer and information systems like IoT, Advanced Mobile Application Development and Intelligent System Design.
Question: I have 59% marks in HSC (Pre-Engg), can I get admission in B.E. (Computer Systems)?
Answer: No. Minimum eligibility to get admission in B.E. (Computer Systems) is 60% in HSC (Pre-Engg) or Equivalent qualification.
Question: I have 68% marks in HSC. I want a career in the field of computers. What you suggest for me in selection of B.E. (Computer Systems).
Answer: If you want to be an engineer and wish to enjoy the benefits of the engineering profession in your life, B.E. (Computer System) is definitely a better choice. However, every accomplishment in life comes with hard work and challenges. B.E. (Computer System) requires your time and good learning habits so if you are able to take challenges of advanced learning, you can be a successful engineer.
Question: What are the options for higher studies abroad or working abroad after getting degree in computer systems engineering.
Answer: A large number of computer systems engineering graduates from Pakistan are working abroad or doing masters and PhD is many relevant areas in modern countries. In addition, computer engineers are now increasingly considering their own business as an entrepreneur for providing services in local and international markets. The field and knowledge allowing them to work from home or small setup with full strength.
Question: What are the job prospects after completing B.E. (Computer Systems).
Answer: Since computer systems engineers have both expertise in the areas of software development and IT as well as in electronic systems, sensors, networks and HW design, they have larger diversified market to join worldwide. They can work in advanced programming and databases, Internet programming, advanced mobile application development, android app development for tablets, smart TVs and other domestic appliances, Internet of Things (IoT), information systems, intelligent system design, robotics, computer aided manufacturing etc.
