He was one of the most technically proficient and influential of the avant-garde trumpeters, often possessing an atmospheric, introspective, and lyrical quality. He was also a prolific composer and bandleader, who collaborated with many renowned musicians and groups, such as Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland, John Taylor, Norma Winstone, Azimuth, Globe Unity Orchestra, and Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra.
