In this scenario, I installed a server core, as shown below, to a VM from the Windows Server 2012 R2 iso file, en_windows_server_2012_r2_with_update_x64_dvd_4065220.iso, downloaded from MSDN. And later changed the server core installation to one with server-gui-shell, i.e. with a full server GUI using DISM online commands. The OS disk is 40 GB in size.

If you want to create only standalone machines (machines in a workgroup), no domain is required. However, in this lab, there will be one domain with one domain controller and one member server. As such, a domain needs to be defined for the lab.

All required ISO files for software (operating systems, server applications, and client applications) to be used in the lab need to be defined for AutomatedLab to find it. If you add an operating system ISO, you need to mark it with the IsOperatingSystem switch. The Name parameter is used only to uniquely identify the ISO definition, and it is not used elsewhere. The name is your choice, but it has to be unique in the lab.

Here I am only assigning 1GB of memory to my virtual machine, which happens to be called MS02A. This will just be a simple member server as I haven't quite decided what I want it to do just yet. I also specified a new virtual hard drive (VHD) to be automatically created with a size of 60GB to host the operating system and to store the VHD and the virtual machine files in their respective folders.

Now that we have a virtual machine created, we can now move forward and make some additional customizations such as setting the number of processors on the virtual machine and setting the dynamic memory on the system.
