What is the British Pharmaceutical Codex 1973 and why is it important?

The British Pharmaceutical Codex (BPC) was a book that contained a wide range of information on drugs, preparations, and pharmaceutical standards. It was published by the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, the professional body for pharmacists in the United Kingdom. The BPC was intended to complement the official British Pharmacopoeia, which only contained standards for selected drugs and preparations. The BPC provided more comprehensive and practical information for pharmacists, physicians, and other health professionals.

The BPC was first published in 1907, and underwent several revisions until the last edition in 1973. The 1973 edition contained over 900 pages of monographs on drug substances, dosage forms, pharmacological and therapeutic information, nomenclature, and miscellaneous data. It also included an index of diseases and their recommended treatments, as well as a section on pharmaceutical microbiology and sterile processing. The BPC was widely used as a reference book and a formulary in the UK and other Commonwealth countries.
