Murugadoss and Jayaraj went to Singapore during June 2010 to compose the songs for the film.[1] Each tracks consisted of varied genres with some of the songs which were shot in Chennai, as well as in Thailand and Hong Kong.[2]

In mid-2011, Sony Music India secured the film's audio rights for an undisclosed price.[3] The audio launch was initially set to be held on 10 September 2011 in Malaysia.[4] However, the event was held at the Chennai Trade Centre on 22 September 2011.[4] Jai and Anjali, lead pair of Murugadoss' production Engeyum Eppodhum, hosted the event, which saw the attendance of the film crew along with Dhanush, Karthi, Jiiva, Jayam Ravi, Vishal and Ram Charan,[5] and a live performance of the songs by Isha Sharvani, Lakshmi Rai and several international artists.[6] Though initial reports said that Shah Rukh Khan would appear in the launch,[7] it was not happened.[8]

Arivu was brought up in Arakkonam, a town 60 kilometres west of Chennai. He was exposed to many folk songs as he grew up in family without TV and radio, as his parents wanted him to concentrate on school. He started to write poems about caste and poverty in his high school days and became more politically conscious during his college.[1][2]

While pursuing his MBA in college, Arivu met Pa. Ranjith who signed him to be part of Kaala (2018). Arivu had later auditioned and landed a role in Ranjith's band The Casteless Collective. He has since made several independent songs in addition to composing songs for Tamil-language films. Arivu teamed with music producer OfRo to create the album Therukural (Voice of street), which became popular upon release.[1][3][4][5] After many film song hits, he teamed up with Dhee and Santhosh Narayanan as music producer under label Maajja, an independent platform launched by Indian producer A. R. Rahman and released the single Enjoy Enjaami in March 2021, the song and its music video received viral response, it has crossed 400 million views on YouTube as of April 2022.[6][7]

The Casteless Collective is a \u201Cprotest music ensemble\u201D - a group of \u201Csocially and musically diverse\u201D artists from Chennai brought together with the particular intent of making music that speaks truth to power and brings issues of caste discrimination and inequality to the fore. The social activist and filmmaker Pa Ranjith\u2019s vision was instrumental to the formation of the band. 

The band uses traditional and local musical instruments and styles along with western music in its composition. Gaana music that is traditionally played at funerals and other community events is the vehicle to address social issues and identity politics. Gaana is popular in North Chennai - many of the performers in the 19 member band have faced tremendous caste discrimination, and some have played in funerals all their lives. They had never faced a live audience before joining the band. The members assert that the form was never meant to be performed on the stage, but the eclectic mix of various folk and modern forms allows them to create a unique sound to address issues that touch their very existence. The lyrics are conversational, while the themes are serious. The band members talk of a variety of influences including the Black Arts movement and hip-hop. The influences are varied, featuring just about every genre that \u201Ccomes from a place of aggression and anarchy\\\".
