6LACK, born Ricardo Valdez Valentine Jr., broke through in 2016 with his debut album, "Free 6lack," which included the hits "PRBLMS," "Free" and "Ex Calling" and earned him two Grammy nominations. He scored his third nomination in 2019 for "Pretty Little Fears" from his second album, "East Atlanta Love Letter."

But 6LACK's depression lingered and was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. He realized he needed help after one of the closest people in his life called him out for putting up the facade that he had it all together. "Things started to actually fall apart," he says, and he decided to start therapy.

In contrast, "SIHAL" has minimal features, with Wale, Don Toliver and QUIN as the only collaborators. There are samples from Yebba and Sting, as well as interludes from close friends and family. This is 6LACK's "diary," and he's keeping the story close to home. "These are my thoughts, and I think I can pretty much handle it on my own," he says.

"SIHAL" isn't just about his mental health, it's about love. "I'm knee-deep, waist-deep, neck-deep (in love)," he says of his relationship with fellow singer Bianca Quiones (known by her stage name QUIN). The couple made their debut in 2019 with collaborative single "Mushroom Chocolate."

Shaping her development has taught 6LACK to bring back his own "innocence" and experience joy in a more childlike state. "You can have fun and you can take off your cool and you can smile and you can laugh and you can be silly," he says. "It's just been amazing."

Unlearning has been a large part of 6LACK's hiatus, which is evident throughout "SIHAL." When fans listen to the album, he says, they'll quickly discover the answer to "Where has 6LACK been?" He has been hurting, healing, admitting when he's wrong, finding ways to make things right, and emerging as his best self.

Within the past week, there's been several unfortunate incidents with artists. Before the weekend, Rich The Kid was robbed and beat down in a home invasion that left him hospitalized. Yesterday, XXXTENTACION was senselessly killed after leaving a motorsports store. A few hours later, Jimmy Wopo was pronounced dead in a double shooting in Pittsburgh. In a short period of time, two artists were murdered and one was left in a hospital due to violence. 6lack says these incidents are a reminder to artists to keep their guard up at all times.

6lack was recently approached by TMZ while at the airport. 6lack is set to hit the road with Rich The Kid on Chris Brown's "Heartbreak On A Full Moon" tour alongside H.E.R. He explained that those kind of situations are a reminder that you have to stay alert.

East Atlanta Love Letter is the second studio album by American singer 6lack. It was released on September 14, 2018 by LVRN and Interscope Records. This is the follow-up to his 2016 release, Free 6lack. The production on the album was handled by multiple producers including T-Minus, Cardiak, Joel Little and Bizness Boi among others. The album also features guest appearances from Future, J. Cole, Offset and Khalid.

"Free 6lack was about everything I'd been through up to that point; the follow-up is an update on what's going on in my life right now. In two years, things have gone from one side of the spectrum to another. Anything I've had to go through, or learn, has been crammed into them: from being a dad, to [ending and starting] new relationships, to becoming famous and figuring out my responsibilities."[6]

East Atlanta Love Letter debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart, earning 77,000 album-equivalent units (including 20,000 copies as pure album sales) in its first week.[3] This became 6lack's first US top-ten debut and his highest-charting release in the US to date.[3] In its second week, the album dropped to number 12 on the chart, earning an additional 32,000 units.[29] On December 10, 2020, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined sales and album-equivalent units of over 500,000 units in the United States.[4]

6lack is up for Best New R&B Artist at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, which will take place on Sunday, March 11, at the historic Forum in Los Angeles. It's a seriously tough category this year. The singer will be up against Kehlani, Kevin Ross, Khalid, and SZA (who is favored to win). But there is one burning question I know you probably want the answer to, so here's how to pronounce 6lack, in case you were wondering. Because I know I definitely was!

The 25-year-old Atlanta singer blew up in November 2016 when his debut album, Free 6LACK, was released and hit number five on the Billboard rap charts. OK, so here's how you don't pronounce his name: It's not "six-black" or "six-lack" or "slack." It's just simply, "black." I guess that's kind of cool since the six at the beginning sort of looks like a lowercase "b," right? I mean, I totally get what he was going for here. But meanwhile, 6lack's fans were are all kinds of confused, so the singer took to Twitter to try and set the record straight. "Pronounced black," is all it says in his Twitter bio. So brilliant. He even asked his fans for a little help spreading the word:

Such beautiful words. I love when an artist is not afraid to get real with his fans. 6lack also shared that he was postponing his upcoming European tour because he wanted to take time off to focus on being a father to his one-year-old daughter Syx. (Another 6!)

As its name suggests, Free 6lack also includes a strong claim for freedom born from having been burned by the music industry and its fallacious promises. After giving up his university studies for good, he signed a contract that took him to Miami, where his dreams turned into a nightmare. His producers wanted him to make highly formatted hits, mass-produced according to tried-and-tested formulae. Contractually unable to free himself from his obligations, he set himself on a path of passive resistance, receiving no money and even sometimes sleeping rough.

As you can deduce, the number six holds a lot of meaning to 6lack. Another reason he felt drawn to the digit came after being involved in a car accident several years back. Thankfully, he came out unscathed. But his recollection of the event to GQ is chilling. 2351a5e196
