Tracey Young and the students of Benton Hall Academy
Benton Hall Academy is now in its ninth year of implementing the ITEEA Engineering by Design program. Through authentic problem- and project-based learning, our students master the Engineering Design Process while preparing for future STEM careers. This approach introduces students to the National Academy of Engineering’s 14 Grand Challenges, tasking them with solving real-world issues. Come watch as four groups of BHA students present their innovative Grand Challenge projects!
Ronald Alexander - SUNY Oswego
This session introduces Technology, Energy & Power, and Automotive educators to using a PicoScope lab oscilloscope in the classroom. Through demonstrations with a low-amp current clamp, participants will explore brush-type motor testing, starter current analysis for relative engine compression, commutator signal patterns for motor integrity, and current ramping techniques. Attendees will gain practical ideas for teaching advanced electrical diagnostics and helping students visualize electrical behavior beyond what a standard multimeter can provide.
Nathan Smith - Elmira High School
Come learn about a hands on project that many teachers are successfully using to teach real-world digital fabrication. Using the laser cutter, 3D printer, and/or CNC router, you will learn how to design, and make!, a USB powered LED sign. Participants will make and take one project.
This session is repeated on Thursday Session 2
9:45 - 10:05 - Coffee Break with the Vendors

Derek Taylor - SUNY Poly
This session examines the rapidly evolving AI landscape and what it means for K–12 education. Attendees will explore emerging AI capabilities, key trends shaping teaching and learning, and the practical implications for curriculum and assessment. The presentation is designed to help educators better understand the AI frontier and respond thoughtfully to its opportunities and challenges.
Travis Owens - Westmoreland Middle School
When you're a beginning teacher, you do all you can to keep your head above water. Someone told me the first three years you survive (hopefully). By the 6th year, you should be thriving (if you didn't have to start all over). But by year 10 or so of doing the same things, some people start to get bored. Being bored isn't so bad when you're nearing retirement, but what do you do to keep your job interesting for the 3rd quarter of your career? This session we will collaboratively share activities that help you find pleasure in teaching and in life.
Your group leader is often told by others "you're a busy guy." Join Travis and Tracy in the conversation and make connections, and get ideas to keep your brain and body at a healthy balance.
Michael Gembar - Lancaster Middle School
Introduction to WeVideo software and how you can apply it your classroom to improve your teaching.

Christina O'Malley - Akron Central and Buffalo State
In this interactive session, you'll step into the role of a student and take on an exciting engineering design challenge. This cross-curricular STEM experience integrates artificial intelligence in engaging, accessible ways to activate prior knowledge and inspire biomimicry with image generative AI. The activity also includes programming a Micro:bit microcontroller, offering a hands-on exploration of how nature, technology, and creativity intersect. Participants will walk away with a turn-key, standards aligned STEM design challenge to run in any grade 2-12 classroom, makerspace, or enrichment program.
Nate Smith - Elmira High School
3D printers have become a staple of the Tech Ed classroom... and the students love them! But what else can we do with them? In this presentation, you will see how I took an idea presented a few years ago and turned it into a class project that teaches the concepts of the Design Process, Measuring & Tolerances, CAD and Design for Manufacturing, all while having my students organize my tools for me.
This session is repeated on Thursday Session 4
Matt Vankoughnett - Pine Valley
Ever come across something on youtube that stops you in your tracks. It happened to me when I discovered a Youtuber named TooTallToby. He was hosting a live CAD competion with people from Italy and Spain. Your competition can use any 3d modeling software (I'll use Onshape), and there are many types of drawing examples available ranging from simple to complex. Choose your adventure and set your kids on a path to succeed and have fun with CAD!
This session will explore Career and Technical Education (CTE) in New York State, with an emphasis on Technology Education and its role in preparing students for postsecondary success. Attendees will learn how students access CTE at local school districts and BOCES, examine the supportive role of the NYSED Office of CTE, and walk through statewide enrollment data and participation trends.
