One of the most difficult aspects of verbs is learning to conjugate irregular verbs. Unfortunately, because there are no patterns to follow, the best way to remember them is through practice and familiarization.

I've noticed something in my oldest daughter that I haven't heard of elsewhere. For a few regular verbs, she has an irregular form that she consistently uses instead of the regular form. For "wait" she says "wote" for the past tense, and for "dream" she says "drame."

Has anyone heard of this? Evidently she's internalized certain patterns in strong verbs and extrapolated them to a few regular verbs. I find it fascinating and would love to hear other examples that have been observed.

Most verbs in the English language are regular verbs, which means that the past simple form and the past participle are created by simply adding '-ed' or '-d' or sometimes '-t', to the end of the verb.

Irregular verbs do not follow a fixed pattern when turning into the simple past or past participle form.

Their number is limited compared to regular verbs. There are approximately 200 irregular verbs in the English language. The irregular verbs are categorized into four groups:

Memorizing verbs (and their conjugations) is the single most important part of learning Spanish. As you probably know, a lot of verbs are "regular", meaning they follow a standard conjugation pattern. There are three categories of regular verbs: verbs ending in -ar, verbs ending in -er, and verbs ending in -ir. Here are the 50 most common regular verbs in Spanish, divided by category.

This is the most common category. There are hundreds of verbs ending in -ar. You should eventually learn how to conjugate them in all tenses. The conjugation endings for the present tense are -o, -as, -a, -amos, -is, -an. Here are the most common ones:

There are not that many regular verbs ending in -er in Spanish, but some of them are very important. The conjugation endings for the present tense are -o, -es, -e, -emos, -is, -en. Here are the most common ones:

Again, there are not that many regular verbs ending in -ir in Spanish, but, again, some of them are very important. The conjugation endings for the present tense are -o, -es, -e, -imos, -s, -en. Here are the most common ones:

Every sentence you say or write in Spanish will have a verb in it. Learning vocabulary is important, but verbs are the backbone of the language. Make sure you know lots of them, and make sure you know how to conjugate them properly in the most important tenses.

Many languages, including English and Spanish, feature regular (dance --> danced) and irregular (catch --> caught) inflectional systems. According to psycholinguistic theories, regular and irregular inflections are instantiated either by a single or by two specialized mechanisms. Those theories differ in their assumptions concerning the underlying information necessary for the processing of regular verbs. Whereas single mechanism accounts have stated an increased involvement of phonological processing for regular verbs, dual accounts emphasize the prominence of grammatical information. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we sought to delineate the brain areas involved in the generation of complex verb forms in Spanish. This language has the advantage of isolating specific differences in the regular-irregular contrasts in terms of the number of stems associated with a verb while controlling for compositionality (regular and irregular verbs apply suffixes to be inflected). The present study showed that areas related to grammatical processing are active for both types of verbs (left opercular inferior frontal gyrus). In addition, major differences between regular and irregular verbs were also observed. Several areas of the prefrontal cortex were selectively active for irregular production, presumably reflecting their role in lexical retrieval (bilateral inferior frontal area and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). Regular verbs, however, showed increased activation in areas related to grammatical processing (anterior superior temporal gyrus/insular cortex) and in the left hippocampus, the latter possibly related to a greater implication of the phonological loop necessary for the reutilization of the same stem shared across all forms in regular verbs.

In English, regular verbs consist of three main parts: the root form (present), the (simple) past, and the past participle. Regular verbs have an -ed ending added to the root verb for both the simple past and past participle. Irregular verbs do not follow this pattern, and instead take on an alternative pattern.

The following is a partial list of irregular verbs found in English. Each listing consists of the present/root form of the verb, the (simple) past form of the verb, and the past participle form of the verb.

I made a quiz for conjugating regular verbs in Spanish. It has the first, second, and third person pronouns in both singular and plural forms (yo, tu, usted, el, ella, elle, nosotros, nosotras, ustedes, ellos, ellas, elles) and has a few -ar verbs built in, although you can change the verb list by simply editing the project. You'll get points for answering questions correctly (saying the pronoun and the conjugated verb) and you'll lose points for answering questions incorrectly (you'll see the correct answer.) Have fun!

Depends what part of the two languages you're comparing. English is simple in that it pretty much has no inflection (different endings for words depending on number and gender) except for a couple of special verbs (to be: I am, you are, etc.). But English is the champion at compound verbs consisting of a verb and a preposition: put up, put down, put across, put over, put in, put out, put through, put right, all with meanings completely unrelated to the unmodified verb "put."

The preterite tense is one of the 2 simple past tenses. It is the more complicated one and so it helps to divide it into manageable parts. The one thing that most verbs will have in common in the preterite is their endings.

Notice that the nosotros form endings for AR and IR verbs are the same as they were in the present tense. The way to tell them apart is by the context around them. If you have other verbs in the preterite, then they are likely to be preterite also. If you have words like ayer that indicate the past, then they would also be preterite in those cases as well. You can use the conjugator above to get some examples or practice predicting the forms yourself.

Knowing the endings for regular verbs in the preterite, makes learning the irregular ones much easier. The 3rd person plural (Uds., ellos and ellas) form is also used to get the stem for the past subjunctive forms.

Regardless of whether a regular verb is a -t variant verb or not, its past tense form and past participle will be identical. For example, the past tense of ask is asked and the past participle of ask is also asked. You can see additional examples of this in the following sentences:

A regular verb is any verb that follows the general rules of conjugating verbs. For this reason, many types of verbs can also be regular verbs. For example, both action verbs and stative verbs can be regular verbs:

Hello everybody, after a bit of a break for learning to talk a bit in 25 languages, French on a Windowsill returns! And this time, I bring you regular verbs. Along with some useful grammar hints about verbs, conjugation and stem + ending, you will get to know the 3 groups of regular verbs in French.

The third group does have a regular conjugation, but do spend some time hugging the dictionary or Bescherelle* because a lot of verbs that end in -re are irregular. Need I say tre or faire? But don't be disheartened, because knowing the regular conjugation means you couldn't go too wrong even if you tried:

To conjugate the regular verbs ending on -ir in the present tens, we replace the -ir with the endings -o, -es, -e, -imos, -s, -en for the respective persons. It is noticeable that the endings resemble those of the er-conjugation. The difference is in the 1st - and 2nd - person plural. 17dc91bb1f
