Because this app operates entirely locally to capture and process your photos, it requires permission to access your device’s hardware and local storage. If you accidentally denied these permissions when opening the app for the first time, you may experience a completely black camera screen or find that your images aren't saving.
If you open the app and see a black screen instead of a live camera feed, iOS is blocking the app from accessing your camera hardware.
The Quick Fix: 1. Open your device's main Settings app. 2. Scroll down until you see the list of all your installed apps, and tap on Half. 3. Locate the Camera toggle and switch it ON (green). 4. Force-close the app and reopen it; your live camera feed will now appear.
If you take a photo but it fails to compile or appear in your photo library, the app doesn't have permission to write files to your device storage.
The Quick Fix:
Open your device's main Settings app.
Scroll down and tap on Half.
Tap on Photos.
Change the setting from None to Full Access (or Limit Access if you only want to select specific folders, though Full Access is recommended for seamless saving).
The interface is designed to be completely minimal, letting you focus entirely on your composition. Instead of numerical counters, the app uses visual indicators to help you track your progress through each two-exposure diptych layout.
If tapping the shutter doesn't capture an image, the app is likely finalizing a process or waiting for standard device hardware initialization.
The Quick Fix: 1. Ensure you have granted full camera permissions (see Section 1). 2. If you just opened the app, give the camera sensor a split second to initialize before pressing the shutter. 3. If the button remains completely unresponsive, quickly force-close the app and reopen it to reset the camera session.
If you are wondering why your photo hasn't appeared in your gallery immediately after pressing the shutter, this is by design.
The Quick Fix: * The two outlines above the shutter button represent your current vertical diptych pair.
When you take your first shot, the first frame outline will shade in. The app is now holding that frame in its memory, waiting for your next composition.
When you take your second shot, the second frame will shade in, and the app will instantly stitch the two consecutive moments together into your final diptych layout before clearing the indicators for your next pair.
Because the app is built to run cleanly in full-screen mode across different iOS devices, unexpected display layouts can occasionally happen if switching views or rotation settings rapidly.
The Quick Fix: * The app is optimized for a fixed, intentional vertical layout to match the classic orientation of half-frame photography.
If buttons look misaligned, simply swipe up to close the app, clear it from your background app switcher, and relaunch it while holding your phone vertically.
Ready to move on to Section 3: Creating Diptychs to explain what happens to that single "held" frame if someone accidentally closes the app mid-shoot?
On rare occasions, the camera interface might freeze right when you launch the app, leaving the controls unresponsive.
The Quick Fix: You can manually kickstart the camera session without needing to restart the app:
Tap the Gallery icon to switch over to your photo library view.
Tap the Camera icon to toggle right back to the shooting screen.
This quick view-switch forces the camera hardware to refresh and unlock the interface immediately.
The app automatically pairs consecutive moments into a single, vertical diptych. Because the magic happens across a two-exposure cycle, understanding how the app manages these frames ensures your visual stories match your creative intent.
If you take your first photo (shading in the first frame indicator) and then close the app, lock your phone, or take a phone call, you might wonder if your progress is wiped.
The Quick Fix: * Your shot is safe. The app is designed to remember where you left off.
When you reopen the app, you will see that the first frame indicator is still shaded.
Your next shot will automatically pair with that saved first frame, no matter how much time has passed between exposures.
If you take a first shot but change your mind and don't want it paired with your next photo, you need a way to clear the active slot.
The Quick Fix: * Because the app embraces a minimalist, intentional workflow, there is no manual "delete draft" button on the shooting screen.
To start fresh, simply snap a quick throwaway shot to complete the current pair.
Once the diptych is generated, tap into the Gallery, select that unwanted diptych, and delete it. Your frame indicators will reset, giving you a clean slate.
If your finalized visual story looks slightly misaligned or cut off at the center border, it is usually a result of shifting your phone's physical angle between shots.
The Quick Fix: * The app splits the frame vertically with a precise, clean layout.
For perfectly balanced diptychs, try to maintain the same physical orientation (keeping your phone strictly vertical) for both exposures.
If you are intentionally going for a mismatched, abstract look, feel free to tilt or shift your angle for the second shot to experiment with creative composition!
Every finalized diptych is processed and stored safely inside your app’s built-in local gallery. Because the app respects your privacy and stores nothing on external servers, managing your library happens entirely on your physical device.
If you open your device's native Apple Photos app and don't see your creations, it means they are currently sitting securely inside the app's internal storage and haven't been exported yet.
The Quick Fix: 1. Open the app and tap the Gallery icon. 2. Tap on the specific diptych you want to save to expand it. 3. Tap the Share/Export button (usually an arrow icon) and select Save Image. 4. The diptych will instantly copy over to your main iPhone camera roll, ready to share with friends and family.
If you jump into your gallery and see empty placeholders or a slight delay before your images pop up, the local database is likely just refreshing.
The Quick Fix: * Give the app a second to render the high-resolution images. Because diptychs combine two high-quality photos, loading them simultaneously takes a little device processing power.
If the screen stays blank, ensure you haven't revoked full media access in your iOS device settings (see Section 1).
A quick toggle back to the camera view and back to the gallery will instantly force the database to reload your library.
If a composition didn't turn out quite right and you want to clean up your in-app library, you can delete it directly from your view.
The Quick Fix: 1. Tap into the Gallery and select the diptych you want to remove. 2. Tap the Delete (trash can) icon. 3. Confirm the deletion. Note: Because everything is local, deleting an image from the in-app gallery is permanent and cannot be undone unless you already exported a copy to your main iPhone camera roll.
The app features custom-tuned emulation engines designed to mimic the distinct visual personalities of classic analog film stocks. Because these profiles handle color, grain, and contrast differently, choosing the right simulation can completely transform your composition.
If you notice dramatic shifts in warmth, contrast, or skin tones between your shots, the simulation engine is working exactly as intended to replicate vintage chemistry.
The Quick Fix: * Gold 200: Gives you rich, classic warmth with vibrant golden undertones. It’s perfect for daylight, outdoor snapshots, and nostalgic everyday moments.
Tri-X 400: Converts your scene into high-contrast, deeply expressive black and white with a timeless, gritty grain structure. Ideal for street photography, dramatic lighting, and deep shadows.
Chrome 64: Delivers a vivid, saturated slide-film look with high contrast and deep, rich blues and greens. It shines brightest in well-lit architectural spaces or lush landscapes.
Analog film stocks naturally require a lot of light to produce clear images. If you are shooting indoors at night or in a dimly lit room, your photos might look heavily textured or dark.
The Quick Fix: * Embrace the grain! Vintage film stocks like Tri-X 400 look incredibly artistic when the grain pushed in low-light environments.
If you want a cleaner look, tap the Flash icon on the main interface to illuminate your subject, or move your composition closer to a natural light source like a window or lamp.
If you took a photo using one simulation but want to see how it looks in black and white or slide film, you might look for a filter button in the gallery.
The Quick Fix: * To stay true to the authentic, deliberate workflow of traditional half-frame photography, the film simulation is locked in at the exact moment you press the shutter.
Think of it like loading a physical roll of film into a camera—once it’s exposed, the chemistry is set! If you want to experiment with a different look, toggle your simulation choice on the camera screen before snapping your next diptych pair.
