Where Is That Bullseye?
Group Size - What is expected with the 44-40?
Looking for 1" groups at 25 yards, 2" groups at 50 yards, 4" groups at 100 yards, 8" groups at 200 yards and 24" groups at 300 yards.
However, the Winchester 73' rifle being used for these targets is equipped with a 6x Malcom scope...with custom tic marks and a custom brass windage/elevation tab.
Fine Tuning The Scope
9-20-2025
I have had this Malcolm scope for nearly eight years. As with most hunting rifles, I basically set it for a certain range and left it alone. Now I want to be able to mark the scope settings to get "on paper" in an instant at any range. Once on paper, then we can fine tune if necessary. Counting clicks can get messy with one little miscount. Thus I decided to mark the scope frame for elevation and windage, in conjunction with the turret marks. This is more in line with original scopes used on the 73's.
The data below is what I have completed thus far. Once I have the marks completed, I will then shoot several targets at different time intervals using the same data, and then see how consistent the process.
The Modification
After using this scope for the past 7 years without a "return to battery" lock-ring, I elected to not use this now available feature. In my opinion the 44-40 does not produce enough recoil to justify the new feature. Instead, I used the "extra" lock-ring to mount a copper tab to be used as in indicator for elevation and windage. The lock-ring is clamped to the scope on the aft side of the rear mount. As can be seen in the photos, it will be used in conjunction with the turret marks to quickly acquire a target at any range. So far it works fine. Once I shoot 300 yards, I will add the mark to the mount. So far I only have two marks, 50, 100 and 200 yards.
The tic marks on the side of the frame are secondary (backup) marks and may be removed when the primary marks are finalized.
Elevation settings
50 yards, #4 on the turret
100 yards, #7 on the turret (28 clicks, 1 turn plus 3 from 50 yards)
200 yards, #7 on the turret (75 clicks, 3 turns from 100 yards)
300 yards, #20 on the turret (50 clicks, 2 turns plus 13 clicks from 200 yards)
The horizontal lines on the back of the frame are the primary elevation tick marks. There is only one vertical tic mark, and it is covered by the windage indicator.
Windage is nearly untouched, only one click between 50 and 300 yards.

Now that the target acquisition settings are set, hopefully I can spend some time fine tuning some targets in the above charts!!
