100 yrds vs 200 yrds

<---The weapon of choice for the day is the Marlin 1898 manufactured in 1891 using a Lyman peep sight. These old eyes can deal with 100 yards but 200 yards is a bit to be desired.

100 yrds vs 200 yrds

Lyman Peep Sight

Once again I bring up a topic that could be argued into the next century. However, basically we have a rifle cartridge that has a modern day reputation of only being dependable out to 100 yards. In all fairness, because of the way this cartridge is loaded now days, this statement is not all false. With the right tools, and if the handloader as well as the shooter does his part, it has already been proven out to 265 yards with smokeless powder by myself and to 300 meters with black powder by John Kort. I made another enjoyable trip to the range the other day and shot some typical 100 and 200 yard targets. I used 27.5 gr of Reloder 7 with 200gr Magma bullets. These typically give me an avg of 1,440fps @ 13,500psi, ES of 74 and an Sd of 25. Incidentally about 797fps in a revolver. Sure, this load leaves unburnt powder or "skeletons" but that does not bother me.

Took me a few to pull the shots in center but it was consistent at 100 yards. The peep sight hole is blurry but I can still make out the center pretty good.

200 yrds was a bit of a challenge and out of some 10 shots, I only managed to make four hits.

These too were all handloaded with hand tools.

I handloaded some more for another day!!!

Picked up a Malcom scope, so my next trip to the range will be with the 73'!!!
