Throughout history, Taiwan's hilly lands have been known by various names. During the Qing dynasty, they were regarded as "uncultivated land" and referred to as “沿山埔地 (yánshān pǔdì, foothill plains).” Under Japanese rule, the colonial authorities redefined these areas as “林野 (rinya, forestlands),” emphasizing their dense broadleaf forests. Despite their outward tranquility, these landscapes were shaped by fierce competition among people and constant interactions with the forces of nature.
