Over time, different groups have shaped the Datun Volcano Group into their visions of “nature.” But what is nature? And who decides its meaning? This exhibition explores the environmental history of the Datun Volcano Group and uncovers three “natural” multiverses: Mountains of the State, Mountains of the City, and Mountains of Locale.
In this section, visitors will see how the government gradually shaped the tennen landscape of the Datun Volcano Group through surveying, investigating, afforestation, and ecological conservation. This section explores how the Datun Volcano Group became a recreational space for city dwellers. What did “nature” mean from the perspective of ordinary citizens, and what made it so appealing? This section centers on those who live from the land. Who are they? How do they sustain themselves? And how do they view the tennen pursued by the state and city dwellers?
In today’s era of global climate change, the tennen landscape of the Datun Volcano Group is under growing threat. By looking to the past to understand the present, this exhibition invites you to explore 90 years of “natural” history and reflect on what lies ahead for this volcanic region.
