3ivx (/rvks/ THRIV-eks) was an MPEG-4 compliant video codec suite, created by 3ivx Technologies, based in Sydney, Australia. 3ivx video codecs were released from 2001 to 2012, with releases of related technologies continuing until 2015. 3ivx provided plugins to allow the MPEG-4 data stream to be wrapped by the Microsoft ASF and AVI transports, as well as Apple's QuickTime transport. It also allowed the creation of elementary MP4 data streams combined with AAC audio streams. It only supported MPEG-4 Part 2, it did not support H.264 video (MPEG-4 Part 10).

c) it is most likely a codec problem. Look in the filename of what you downloaded. Usually, the video-codec is mentioned (DIVX, XVID). Google for the codec or download something like the K-Lite-Codec-pack, which includes multiple codecs that should play nearly everything.

The K-Lite codec pack is a pile of steaming horse feces. You're MUCH better off using GSpot to find out what codec it uses and then installing the appropriate codec. In the case of XviD, go to here, and in the case of DivX, go here. For other codecs such as WMV9 or 3viX, searching on Google does a lot more good than getting a codec packs. Being a fansubber, I can attest that codec packs cause more playback issues than the convenience that they provide, simply because codec packs are not updated nearly as much as they should be, causing differences in decoding. This usually results in obvious visual artifacts such as severe blocking, distorted video, and occasionally causing the video to lag.

FFDShow, VLC, MPlayer, and other players built from the libavcodec library aren't as bad, but they still suffer a disadvantage. libavcodec usually isn't the library used to encode the video, which means when it's decoded, there may be slight artifacts. This difference is greatly amplified if you don't use an updated version of the program or codec pack (FFDShow/libavcodec is a codec pack in all respects that I care about, so please do not try to convince me otherwise. Many have tried and all have failed).

If despite all these major concerns you still wish to use a codec pack, please, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure it's fully updated. I've seen too many occurences of people complaining about video artifacts when they're using outdated codecs.

use this tool to know what codes do you need to play that media file, unless you dont know anything about codec information dont install them in your system because installing of lots of codecs can cause system craches

@Silverfire: K-Lite has been quite improved lately. Off all codecs-packs, it is one of the most mature and it is updated very regularly. Depending on what options you choose and which version you download, FFDShow (cvs-build), Windows Media Player Classic and GSpot are included.

Agreed. Although if you haven't sorted out the problem yourself I assume you're not familiar with codecs... probably installing VLC is the way to go. It plays almost everything 'out-of-the-box', is free, and works on many operating systems.

Many Mac users have accumulated a variety of QuickTime components or "plugins" to deal with different types of video. As Mac OS X has been updated over the years, some of these codecs have not kept pace with the changes and can now cause application instability or performance issues in other applications.

If you receive this alert, you should check your system for conflicting codecs. Via Finder, select the "Go" menu and then "Go To Folder." Enter /Library/QuickTime and press return. Look for any of the codecs listed below. If you find them, we recommend dragging them to your desktop or to the trash. In most cases, they're no longer necessary on Mac OS X. If you do need these codecs, make sure you're using the newest version from the codec's vendor.

Don't own one but it appears to use a proprietary (Advanced Profile) MPEG-4 AVI codec which may or may not be the source of your problem. In any case, it is most likely that either the video and/or audio compression format is not "edit" supported by iMovie '08. As always in such cases, your first step should be to open a file in the QT player and consult the "Inspector" window to see what audio/video codecs were used to create the source file. If you are familiar with iMovie requirements then the problem should be obvious. If not and you have QT Pro, you can always extract audio and video to separate MOV file containers and try importing them. If one or both won't import, then you know which is causing he problem. Once you know what iMovie '08 doesn't like, you can convert the track or tracks to appropriate acceptable compression format(s).

hey dave,

Option for file compression is also there to reduce the file size by changing its parameters. The software is available for download on your Windows and Mac PC.

But do you know how I can achieve an MPEG-4 pt. 10 file that has an mp4 file extension? Or, as you said above, an MP4 file that uses the H.263 codec? And just to clarify, why is it H.263, and not H.264 that I should be aiming for?
