Chennai: Former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who was recently told by the Madras High Court to not use the AIADMK flag, name and symbol, abided by the order by turning up in a dhoti without the customary black, white and red border as he returned to Chennai on Wednesday night after a week-long sojourn in Singapore.
Even his car that took him home from the airport did not fly the regular AIADMK flag fluttering from the bonnet though it had an image of J Jayalalithaa placed above the dashboard. Most of his supporters who had gathered at the airport to welcome him too had shunned dhotis with AIADMK colours.
The supporters, who also did not carry the AIADMK flags that they normally bring along with them to see him off or receive him at the airport, said that they would appeal against the High Court order, barring their use of the flag, symbol and party name, when their leader was away in Singapore.
This was perhaps the first time Panneerselvam was spotted in public in a dhoti with a broad regular border and his car did not fly the party flag after he came to limelight in 2001 by becoming the Chief Minister after Jayalalithaa was forced step down from office following a conviction in a case.
On Thursday evening, Panneerselvam supporters met at his house in Greenways Road for a meeting to discuss the future course of action but arrived at the venue in vehicles without the regular AIADMK flags.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday reserved order in the appeal filed by O Panneerselvam challenging the interim order of a single judge restraining him from using the AIADMK flag, symbol and letterhead, besides claiming to be the coordinator of the party. After counsels from both sides completed their arguments, the division bench of justices R Mahadevan and Mohammed Shaffiq reserved the orders.
The Madras High Court on Thursday heard the arguments on the maintainability of the appeal against the order passed by a single judge bench on November 7 granting an interim injunction against expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam (OPS), prohibiting him from using the party's official symbol, flag, or letterhead until November 30.
Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK figurehead, Edappadi K Palaniswami, has approached the Madras High Court seeking a permanent injunction against OPS, preventing him from using the AIADMK's symbols, flags, and official letterhead.
The taxi finally arrived and the small caravan took off. SDS looked up a batch of engineering students on fast on the Sri Lankan issue and arrived at the Nandanam venue at about 10.30 a.m. There, he first addressed a press conference where he announced the name of his new party and its flag.
SDS too has one peculiar problem. Most of his followers now are men from the AIADMK camp and they carry tattooed on their right forearm the AIADMK party flag. This tattoo mark cannot be removed unless one is prepared to disfigure his arm substantially. So SDS will be carrying the MGR tattoo into his camp.
