The game's plot begins in the war-torn nation of Daein with the main character Micaiah and her allies, the Dawn Brigade, rebelling against the oppressive Begnion Occupational Army. The story is divided into four parts, and changes perspective between different factions within the continent of Tellius. The gameplay is similar to Path of Radiance and previous Fire Emblem titles, with units moving across a grid-based map in turn-based battles, and characters unrelated to the core plot being subject to permanent death if defeated.
The game received generally positive reviews, with critics praising the core gameplay, with some criticism directed at the game's lack of motion controls and high difficulty and the changes to support conversations received negative reception. The game sold over 460,000 copies worldwide as of 2009.
Gameplay
Radiant Dawn retains the gameplay mechanics of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, with turn-based battles taking place on a square-based grid. Most of the Path of Radiance cast returns, including all of its playable characters (except Largo), as well as figures new to Tellius. Data from a completed Path of Radiance save file can be transferred to Radiant Dawn via a Nintendo GameCube memory card, which can lead to characters obtaining statistical gains. Support conversations from Path of Radiance can also be accessed and viewed using this method.
In Radiant Dawn, the "support" system has been altered so that a unit can support any other unit, although units can only have one support relationship each. A secondary support known as a "bond" is also available, which is active by default or obtained when two units have attained an "A" support level in Path of Radiance.
A new feature in Radiant Dawn is the ability to promote units into a third tier class when they reach level 21 or use a special item called a Master Crown. Third tier classes have access to powerful skills and weapons, and can also use an item called an S Coin to increase their weapon rank to the highest level, S. Another new feature is the presence of height advantages, which affect the accuracy and damage of attacks depending on whether the attacker or defender is higher up on the terrain.
The game also introduces two new races: the wolf-like Laguz tribe called the Wolfskin, and the bird-like Laguz tribe called the Ravens. The Wolfskin can transform into wolves at will, while the Ravens can fly and steal items from enemies. Both races have their own unique skills and weapons.
Plot
The game's story is set three years after the events of Path of Radiance, in which the mercenary Ike led a coalition army to defeat the tyrannical King Ashnard of Daein. The continent of Tellius is divided into two major alliances: the Laguz Alliance, composed of the beast, bird, and dragon Laguz tribes; and the Begnion Empire, which rules over several human nations. The game's narrative is divided into four parts, each focusing on a different group of characters.
Part 1: Silver-Haired Maiden - The main protagonist is Micaiah, a young woman with silver hair and mysterious powers who leads a rebel group called the Dawn Brigade against the Begnion Occupational Army that oppresses Daein after Ashnard's defeat. She is joined by her childhood friend Sothe, a thief who also appeared in Path of Radiance; Nolan, a former merchant and the leader of the Dawn Brigade; Edward and Leonardo, two young swordsmen; Laura, a priestess; Aran, a soldier; Meg, an armored knight; Volug, a Wolfskin; Zihark, a swordmaster who also appeared in Path of Radiance; Jill and Tauroneo, two former Daein soldiers who also appeared in Path of Radiance; and Nailah and Rafiel, the queen and prince of the desert nation of Hatari. Micaiah and her allies eventually free Daein from Begnion's control and restore the rightful heir, Pelleas, to the throne.
Part 2: Of Countries and Kings - The main protagonist is Elincia, the queen of Crimea who also appeared in Path of Radiance. She faces a rebellion led by a noble named Ludveck, who seeks to usurp the throne. She is aided by her loyal knights, such as Geoffrey, Kieran, Makalov, Astrid, Danved, and Calill; as well as Ike and his mercenary company, the Greil Mercenaries, who include Titania, Oscar, Boyd, Rolf, Shinon, Gatrie, Soren, Mist, Rhys, Mia, Ilyana, Nephenee, Brom, Heather, and Mordecai. Elincia and her allies manage to quell the rebellion and maintain Crimea's independence.
Part 3: Intersecting Vows - The main protagonist is Ike, who becomes the leader of the Laguz Alliance after being hired by Ranulf, a cat Laguz who also appeared in Path of Radiance. He is joined by his sister Mist; Soren, his tactician; Reyson, a heron Laguz who also appeared in Path of Radiance; and several Laguz leaders, such as Tibarn, the king of the hawk tribe; Naesala, the king of the raven tribe; Skrimir, the prince of the lion tribe; Caineghis, the king of the lion tribe; Giffca, Caineghis' shadow; Janaff and Ulki, two hawk generals; Nealuchi, an old raven; Kyza and Lyre, two cat soldiers; and Lethe and Mordecai, two cat soldiers who also appeared in Path of Radiance. The Laguz Alliance declares war on Begnion after the latter's senate orders the massacre of the heron clan at Serenes Forest. They are opposed by Begnion's army led by Zelgius, a general who also appeared in Path of Radiance; Levail, Zelgius' second-in-command; Jarod, a commander who fought against Micaiah in Part 1; Hetzel and Valtome, two senators; and Numida, a duke. The war also involves Daein's army led by Micaiah and Pelleas; and Crimea's army led by Elincia. The war ends with the revelation that Ashera, the goddess of order who created Tellius, has awakened from her long slumber and turned most of the population into stone as punishment for breaking her pact of peace. A small group of survivors from each faction bands together to stop Ashera.
Zihark, Volug, Nailah, Rafiel, Black Knight, Muarim, Vika, Tormod, Sanaki, Skrimir, Naesala, and Lehran; Ike's team includes Titania, Oscar, Boyd, Rolf, Shinon, Gatrie, Soren, Mist, Rhys, Mia, Ilyana, Nephenee, Brom, Heather, Mordecai, Lethe, Ranulf, Reyson, Janaff, Ulki, Tibarn, Elincia, Geoffrey, Lucia, Bastian, Kieran, Makalov, Astrid, Danved and Calill; and a third team composed of characters chosen by the player. The teams travel across Tellius to reach the Tower of Guidance in Begnion's capital Sienne, where Ashera resides. Along the way, they face Ashera's loyal servants: Lekain and the other senators; Deghinsea and the other dragon Laguz; Sephiran and the other apostles; and Ashnard's son and heir Pelleas. The teams eventually reunite at the tower and confront Ashera in a final battle. It is revealed that Ashera's counterpart Yune, the goddess of chaos who was sealed within Lehran's medallion (also known as the Fire Emblem), has been aiding the group by possessing Micaiah. Yune explains that Ashera and Yune were once a single goddess named Ashunera who created Tellius and its inhabitants. However, a great war between the Laguz and Beorc (humans) caused Ashunera to lose control of her emotions and unleash a worldwide flood that killed most of the population. Ashunera then split herself into two halves: Ashera who represents order and stability; and Yune who represents freedom and change. Ashera then made a pact with the surviving Laguz and Beorc leaders that if they could live in harmony for 1000 years without causing another war or awakening Yune from the medallion (which would require a large amount of chaotic energy), she would restore those who died in the flood. However, if they failed to do so, she would pass judgment on them and destroy all life on Tellius. The group manages to defeat Ashera with Yune's help and restore those who were turned to stone. Yune then returns to the medallion and entrusts it to Micaiah. The group then parts ways and returns to their respective countries to rebuild their lives.
