NOTE: Zoro is 3 years older than Harry making him a 4th year during Harry’s 1st year. He graduates Hogwarts at the end of the Goblet of Fire.
Descended from an ancient wizarding family in Japan, Zoro’s magical upbringing was vastly different from many others. His family, who had long defended Japan and the world as Auror’s in the past, had evolved into one of the most powerful families in the nation. However, due to their profession and lethal skills in combat, few remain.
It was due to this legacy and the magical fighting style they created that they were hunted nearly to extinction during Voldemort’s reign before he fell to the boy who lived.
For the Roronoa family had developed a secret method of forging magical swords that could act like wands. Fusing the various metals used with ingredients typically found in a wand to create a weapon of superior strength and magic. With the creation of these swords, his family also developed secret spells specifically designed for fighting with the swords. These two combined factors made them lethal in magical battles since the swords enhanced combat and defense magic significantly.
Thus, Zoro was raised in a strict household. His childhood, as the sole remaining heir to this technic, was dedicated entirely to studying and mastering the art known to the rest of the world as Duel-Weilding. The ancient warriors and Auror’s of his family always fought with a wand in one hand and a sword in the other.
At the age of 11, having mastered his family’s magic and claimed to be a prodigy in the art of Duel-Weilding, he was sent to Hogwarts to complete his traditional magical learning. It was soon after this that a death eater who had long evaded the authorities murdered the rest of his family in an attempt to steal their secret magic. In the massacre, his best friend, Kuina, who was to join him at Hogwarts the following year, was killed.
And so, the legacy that he’d been raised to carry took on a new purpose. For as children do, he and Kuina had vowed to become the greatest Auror’s of their time and restore their family’s name amongst the wizarding world. Tainted during Voldemort’s reign by one of their own joining his Death Eaters.
Upon the rebirth of Voldemort and due to his exceptional N.E.W.T.S. scores and extreme combat abilities, Zoro is recruited as an Auror right after his graduation at the age of 17, following the end of the Triwizard Tournament. Upon Dumbledore’s request, Zoro joins the Order of the Phoenix in secret and within just one year is known throughout the ministry as a talented Auror. This growing reputation at just the age of 18 earns him notice by the Death Eaters and puts a target on his back as one of the top Auror’s to take down in the coming war.
At the age of 20 and with the end of the war, Zoro is one of the last of the highly skilled Auror’s left. Voldemort had put high bounties on the known talents within the division during the initial months of the war to weaken the ministry. Meaning that their numbers are greatly depleted while dealing with the aftermath of the war and rounding up the Death Eater’s that escaped.
In this AU Voldemort isn’t defeated by Harry in the battle for Hogwarts. The war continues for several more years, during which time Zoro becomes known as one of the greatest threats to the Death Eaters while continuing to work with the Order of the Phoenix.
The movements and fighting style of the technique are similar to a samurai’s
Most practitioners of this technique in the past would hold their wand in one hand and the sword in the other. More advanced users of the technique who were chosen/accepted by their swords could manipulate the swords so that they floated around them.
During the founding of Hogwarts, other witches and wizards that would come to be known for their legendary deeds and skills were making their mark upon the Wizarding World. One of these wizards was the man who would come to be known as the honored patriarch of the Roronoa family.
Born to a powerful Japanese wizarding family in ancient Japan, this wizard fell in love with a muggle. The daughter of a powerful Daimyo, whose family had long practiced the art of the sword and was known for not only their skill with the blade but the blacksmiths that created these works of art.
Through the need to blend in with his muggle family and a growing curiosity and respect for the time and effort they put into training as Samurai, Roronoa developed his own technique to pass on to his son who lived with one foot in both worlds. Creating a technique that forged swords in a similar manner to how a wand is created. Embuing these weapons with ancient magic during their forging caused them to be able to wield magic and be used in magical combat.
After learning how to create these magical swords, the patriarch then developed a secret magic that would come to be known throughout the world as the Dual Wielding Technique.
This technique is the art of fighting not only with one’s wand, but a sword as well. Specific spells and abilities with these swords were developed and passed down to each generation until the Roronoa family became one of the most powerful combat witches and wizards in the world.
It was this legendary technique and their devastating combat skills that led to their near annihilation in the first wizarding war against Voldemort.
Due to the intensity of the technique and the high level of skill that is required to wield it, training begins at a young age for all children of the Roronoa family. This regiment includes, but is not limited to, the following which is started at a very young age:
Learning to cast spells without words
Occlumency so they are able to protect the secrets of the technique
Muggle Sword Fighting and combat to ensure they can blend the technique into their magical fighting
Magical Battle-field Healing Techniques
Broom training for Aerial Battles
It became clear to the remaining elders of Zoro’s family that he is a genius in the Dual Weilding Technique. At a young age, he masters the technique and quickly goes on to become proficient in more advanced skills that only a few of each generation can use. By the time his family is killed while he’s at Hogwarts for his first year of traditional magical schooling, he is considered to be the greatest wielder of the technique since their founding patriarch.
Zoro is able to command one sword by the age of 8, two by the age of 10, and masters wielding three by the age of 13. Making him the first wielder who is able to manipulate three swords at the same time.
Kuina is a distant cousin of Zoro’s in this verse who died on the same night as the rest of his family.
Zoro carries the greatest sword ever made by his family, the Wado Ichimonji, and the two swords his parents carried before they were murdered. He is granted special permission by Dumbledore to carry his swords during his school years and is never without them as an Auror. His wand is also strapped to his side with his swords.
One of Zoro’s close friends from school is Summer Abbott (OC), a fellow Hufflepuff who decided he was too grumpy and unsociable for his own good.
He is constantly getting lost in the castle and can often be found in random rooms long forgotten to time. It’s to the point that even the ghosts know to lead him back to the Hufflepuff dorm if they find him wandering around.
Zoro’s favorite class in school was Herbology since it wasn’t a field of study that he was forced to specialize in due to his family background.
Zoro’s goal is to become as legendary of an Auror as Mad-Eye Moody
His ability to control three floating swords and use his wand makes Zoro one of the highest combat threats in the Auror ranks. It’s this combination of defense provided by the swords and the ability to attack with both that makes him utterly devastating on a battlefield.
Zoro takes on shifts to guard the students on the day they return to school.
Since he’s a Hufflepuff, Zoro is close friends with Cedric and was spending the summer with him before his last school year. Attending the Quidditch World Cup with him and his father.
Due to his goal to become an Auror after graduation and not wanting to lose time that would normally be dedicated to training in his Dual-Wielding Technique, Zoro did not enter his name into the Goblet of Fire even though many of his classmates urged him to. He was happy for his friend and helped Cedric whenever he could to prepare for the challenges.
It was Cedric’s death that caused Zoro to join the Order of the Phoenix when he was approached by Dumbledore after his graduation. Infuriated by the fact that the ministry was turning a blind eye to the truth that was right before them.
As an Auror within the Order and a powerful combattant, Zoro is one of the wizards sent to get Harry after he and his cousin are attacked by Dementors.
Molly practically adopts Zoro as one of her own upon learning that he has no family left. Therefore, anytime he returns to Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place she insists on feeding him and ensuring he sleeps and baths. Therefore, he is also practically forced by Molly to join the Weasleys, Harry, and Sirius for Christmas.
Due to constantly coming and going from Grimmauld Place over the summer and having known them in school, Zoro becomes best friends with the Twins. He is also a secret investor in their business after they leave school and open their store.
