"IT'S IMPORTANT TO DRAW WISDOM FROM MANY DIFFERENT PLACES.....IF WE TAKE IT FROM ONLY ONE PLACE IT BECOMES RIGID AND STALE"
- GENERAL IROH OF THE FIRE NATION AND MEMBER OF THE WHITE LOTUS
NATION: Fire
AGE: 19+
BIRTHPLACE: Fire Bender Colonies
OCCUPATION: Member of the Order of the White Lotus
ABILITIES: Master Firebender and Wielder of the Santoryu Swordstyle
Born of a forbidden love between a fire-bending commander and member of the Order of the White Lotus and a water bender from the Northern Water Tribe, Zoro grew up in the fire-bending colonies in the Earth kingdom. Hidden away by Iroh, who learned of Zoro’s true heritage upon his father’s death. Who passed the secret onto Iroh, whom he trusted not only as a fellow member of the White Lotus but as the commander he’d served under for years.
Unable to raise Zoro himself due to his own political standing in the Fire Nation at the time, Iroh instead entrusted him to a small dojo in a remote part of the Fire Nation Colonies. The man, who taught those without bending abilities the art of the sword, raised Zoro along with his daughter Kuina.
It quickly became apparent that Zoro was a genius when it firebending and had a natural talent with the sword. Since he lived at the Dojo he took up learning the art of the sword along with his mandatory firebending training. Over time he blended the two techniques together until he’d created an almost entirely different way of fighting.
Upon the untimely death of Kuina, after the two of them had sworn to become the greatest swordsman in the world, Iroh returned to find Zoro trapped in his grief as he had once been upon the loss of his own son. Zoro’s fire-bending was out of control due to the pain of losing one of the only people he had ever cared about and he was so focused on his training to the point of exhaustion.
It was this growing lack of control and rage, coupled with the resentment that was growing in Zoro’s heart due to Kuina being killed in an Earth Bending raid that caused Iroh to have him sent secretly to the Northern Water Tribe. For he saw in the boy the chance to bring two worlds together as the son of a legendary fire bender with a water bender mother.
And so, in secret, Zoro was sent to the Northern Water Tribe to learn the other half of his heritage. Pakku took the boy in under his wing and upon realizing his natural aptitude for bending began teaching him water bending movements as a way to bond with him. Enforcing strict training and rules upon him to keep his fire bending a secret and help him process the grief of losing his only friend.
It was in the north, surrounded by eternal cold and water, that he truly mastered fire bending and developed his own sword style, Santoryu. Learning how to fuel his bending from his own breathing and inner peace so that no cold could touch him. Welding three swords, after observing the water-bending Octopus Form and through observing and training with Pakku mastered Lightning bending.
Leaving the Northern Water Tribe to travel the world as a secret member of the Order of the White Lotus at the age of 16, Zoro is gifted a new katana with a blue hilt and guard made in the shape of the water-bending symbol in honor of his water tribe roots.
In this branch of the verse, Zoro runs into Aang and the others while they are escaping from the fire nation. Inadvertently being pulled into the fight, he helps aid in their escape since his alliance isn’t really with anyone but himself. After that, he just sort of never leaves until he’s considered part of their team. Oftentimes, taking on an almost fatherly/big brother role for the team in the way Katara is like a mom/older sister to them.
NOTE: This verse can be set anywhere in the timeline of book one or two, but he is an official member by book three. Zoro can either act as Aang’s FIrebending teacher or inform him that he needs to find a master taught in the traditional methods.
WAR TIME: Zoro is a wandering member of the White Lotus, but doesn’t become an official member of Team Aang in this verse. Instead, while an ally of them and always willing to help, he wanders throughout the 4 nations helping those in need.
POST-WAR: Zoro is appointed as the new Grand Lotus by Iroh, who claims that it is time for the next generation to take over and heal the world from the ashes that it has been reduced to.
In addition to the Wado Ichimonji, Zoro has two specially stylized swords. The first is a red-hilted katana with the fire nations emblem on the guard that he inherited from his father. The second is a blue-hilted katana with the symbol for water bending as the guard that was gifted to him by Pakku when he left the Northern Water Tribe.
Zoro’s earrings in this verse have small emblems embossed upon them. One is the White Lotus emblem, another is the fire-bending emblem, and the third is the water-bending emblem.
While Zoro was practically raised by Pakku for several years, it took a very long time for the two of them to warm to each other. Due to his fire bending, which is known only to Pakku and Yue’s family, Zoro is more of a loner within the tribe. Known more as that odd boy that Pakku adopted more than anything else.
While Yue considers him a friend and tries her best to get to know him, he keeps her at arm’s length, terrified to lose another friend while still struggling through his grief over Kuina’s death. Nevertheless, Yue still becomes a close friend of his, though he’d never admit it. Learning of her death causes Zoro to blame himself for leaving the Northern Water tribe and is what finally pushes him to become a full, active member of the White Lotus instead of an honorary member raised within their ranks.
