This page shares five units of youcubed lessons that introduce students (and teachers) to data science. The units start with an introduction to the concept of data and move to lessons that invite students to explore their own data sets. These lessons teach important content through a pattern-seeking, exploratory approach, and are designed to engage students actively. The culminating unit is a citizen science project that gives students an opportunity to conduct a data inquiry. The lessons accompany a new online course for teachers, where some of the lessons are featured, along with other lesson ideas. These lessons are offered with ideas for in-person or online teaching, and can be taught at any time of year.

Starting in 2019, the data science program has awarded the "Data Science Capstone Award" for the best student capstone project and the "Data Science excellence award for highest graduating senior GPA". See our Capstone Day Program for a list of all projects since 2019-2020.

Yet, the K-12 education landscape has been slow to recognize the changes the data explosion has made to society (Wilkerson & Laina, 2017). We are woefully under-preparing our students to successfully navigate the 21st century. The mathematics we teach is rooted in the 1950s space race and offers little practical utility in the 21st century. There is a distinct and widening gap when it comes to the skills and competencies students need in life compared to what is taught in schools.

To prepare learners adequately and succeed as an educational reform, a fundamental shift is needed when it comes to the standards and competencies students are taught. However, we need to build a common definition of data science in K-12. What should be taught to students in K-12 education? What competencies will produce individuals who are data literate when they graduate from grade 12? These difficult questions require multiple communities to come together and address current roadblocks. See the resources below to learn more.

We are working to promote women in computational disciplines at KSU at the undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. levels. We regularly host events which bring together analytical leaders from the Atlanta business community and local universities to network with women interested in pursuing a career in analytics and data science. We hope to see you on campus!

We're expanding freeCodeCamp's Python section into a full-blown data science curriculum. We'll teach the core machine learning concepts and advanced mathematics that data scientists use in the field. What Will the Data Science Curriculum Cover?You'll...

Walk through a demonstration that illustrates how to perform data science with MATLAB. This video series outlines how to import, preprocess, analyze, and visualize your data using MATLAB. You will also learn how to do predictive modeling, work with big data, and deploy the models you create.

Visualizing Data with MATLABUse MATLAB to explore and visualize your data. You can visualize your data in different ways depending on your data type. This video walks through several common methods and visualizations.

If you're interested in learning data science, a great place to start is with Foundations of Data Science, Berkeley's introductory data science course for students from all majors. Whether or not you're a student at Berkeley, you can access the resources created for this innovative course. Lecture videos, slides, course syllabus, homework assignments and more are all available online at

The Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) and the California Water Quality Monitoring Council hosted the Seventh Annual California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium on June 28-30, 2022. This free annual event aims to enhance how water quality monitoring generates and uses meaningful data to inform equitable water quality management decisions.

Ā This year, we are proud to partner with the West Big Data Innovation Hub to host the fifth California Water Data Challenge alongside the California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium!Ā

The Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) and the California Water Quality Monitoring Council hosted the Sixth Annual California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium on June 28 - 30, 2021. This free annual event aims to enhance how water quality monitoring generates and uses meaningful data to inform equitable water quality management decisions.

The Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP), the California Water Quality Monitoring Council, the California Water Boards Data Center, and the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) hosted the Fifth Annual California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium on June 29-30, 2020. This annual event aims to enhance how water quality monitoring generates meaningful data to inform water quality management decisions.

The following subject areas were a focus of the 2018 symposium:Ā  Historical Ecology - What can history tell us about relationships between land use and water resources as urban, suburban, peri-urban and rural landscapes have changed over time in CA? Climate Change as a driver in water resource management. Fire as a driver in water resource management. Cannabis as a new driver in water resource management. Contaminants - The impacts on water resources of emerging contaminants, legacy contaminants, contaminants from fires, and contaminants from other sources; new methods for monitoring. Proactive Water Resource Monitoring - Are we collecting the right data and generating the right information to manage water resources in changing landscapes?Ā

Beyond these broad themes, the following specific topics were prioritized for inclusion in the Symposium program:Ā  Landscape change Statewide monitoring programs Remote sensing Innovative monitoring tools eDNA Open data Data visualization Communication of findings to managers Civic engagementĀ

The Water Board's Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) hosted the 2nd Annual California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium, with the focus being on the use of data by other programs and Departments.

This is an annual event that aims to:Ā  daylight new watershed and data science topics, tool, and insights, insights; better connect data, information and knowledge to water quality stakeholders and decision makers; and create a networking community to enhance better communication throughout the year.Ā

The Water Board's Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) hosted the 1st Annual California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium this summer. This symposium followed the Water Board's Data Fair in March and Data Innovation Challenge in April, with the focus being on the use of data by other programs and Departments.
