The "we" is my friend Gabrielle Gaudet and me. We traveled by foot and by thumb from the site of the ruined Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in the north to the gigantic Mud Creek landslide just south of the hamlet of Gorda. As we walked and hitchhiked, we met a dozen people who are living on this landlocked island. We also walked long stretches where the only sounds came from the sea crashing against the rocks far below and our shoes hitting the sun-bleached pavement.
There are many islands that are connected by one-way bridges,\u00a0that is, if a bridge connects\u00a0islands\u00a0\\(a\\)\u00a0and\u00a0\\(b\\), then you can only use the bridge to go from\u00a0\\(a\\)\u00a0to\u00a0\\(b\\)\u00a0but you cannot travel back by using the same. If you are on\u00a0island\u00a0\\(a\\),\u00a0then you select\u00a0(uniformly and randomly)\u00a0one of the islands that are directly reachable from \\(a\\)\u00a0through the one-way bridge and move to that island. You are stuck on an island if you\u00a0cannot move any further. It is guaranteed that after leaving any island it is not possible to come back to that\u00a0island.
